why are people not taking their rubbish home with them ???.... it breaks my heart seeing all the discarded picnic leftovers scattered over our beautiful green spaces. We are fortunate to have these spaces, we are fortunate they have stayed open for us, and are being cared for by the council staff for our benefit. .. they have been especially beautiful this spring, with kind weather, and are so vital to our mental and physical wellbeing...but now, they look disgusting. WHY do these people think it is ok to do this?? They wouldn't be happy if their children, dogs or family stepped on broken glass, or had to sit amongst rubbish, would they??

SO WHY are selfish, uncaring, idiotic members of the public leaving their rubbish all over the place? They are managing well enough to carry in their picnics and bottled drinks ..so why can't they take the empty packaging, empty(and lighter) bottles, and rubbish home with them????

It is beyond me.. i tried to pick some up.. but didn't have gloves with me and it is just too scary to be doing this at the moment.

It is ignorant selfish people like this who will be the cause of the parks closing..

i have never ranted on here before.. but i am furious and deeply sad, at what i've seen this last week..and feel ashamed at how fellow residents of our area are behaving.

What can we do about this??

These people need to be rewired to clean up after themselves, otherwise the only message we are sending them is that somebody else will do it for them.

A camera, warden & the right to give out warnings & fines to those who litter the parks - it's so depressing that we should have to do this in 2020 but clearly we're living in some Darwinian In Reverse times.

The best one can do is do one?s best. In this case, taking rubbish back home or at least to a less full bin. People are selfish, even ?nice? SE22 folk. I agree it?s bad behaviour but don?t do nothing: pick it up yourself, tackle offenders verbally, speak to your councillor. Hoping selfish actions will go away is a waste of time.

Concurred, why this isn?t being addressed. The selfishness of the few is making hard work for everyone else.

Quite tempted to help the park rangers, not sure how we would go about it.

More worryingly it shows the amount of single use rubbish we consume. It?s not getting better and this lockdown is not changing people?s attitudes.

There are actually several threads on this topic so clearly a lot of us are fed up about it. I think there is more the council could do, including something as simple as more/bigger bins. Brockwell Park has huge dumpster bins and that seemed to be working very well when I was there on Saturday morning. I am going to contact James McAsh (councillor) directly. He was very helpful when I raised issues with him last year about the dumping of domestic rubbish next to the recycling bins on Lordship Lane. I regularly do a litter pick on my daily walk but I'm not up for dealing with piles of discarded rubbish bags without proper equipment and support...
RachP, I completely agree about the council. The vast majority of people are at least polite enough to bag up their rubbish and put it by the bins. It's not the public's fault that the bins are not emptied regularly enough, or that there are not enough of them. Surely this is the sort of thing we pay council tax for, but they seem to get off scott free on this sort of issue.

hi Rachp

well... in Dulwich Park not just by the bins either... glass bottles and rubbish in the middle of the grass, today i noticed a lot inc glass bottles and pizza boxes nowhere near a bin.. and more by the bins overflowing in Peckham Rye... so if i can help at all with your letter, and support to James McAsh, please let me know. i am happy to go out and document with photography.. I usually take photos of trees, and beautiful things..but happy to take pics of rubbish if it helps to support what we are seeing, now on a daily basis after hoards have enjoyed their picnic en plein air....

gsweet87... can't believe you have said.. 'that the vast majority of people are at least polite enough to bag up their rubbish and put it by the bins' !! Polite enough???? I was brought up to never, ever drop rubbish, why is it someonelse's responsiblity to pick it up?? 'Polite' would be to take it home with you as you brought it in with you. Surely money that the councils have would be far better spent on dealing with other more urgent issues,, than picking up lazy people's rubbish!!! I am cross that our council tax money is used on this quite frankly . I don't want to see more and more uglier and bigger bins in green spaces.. spoiling them further.

I just don't get it..and am fed up about this mindset that it's ok to leave rubbish by a bin if it's full. Why can't it be taken home and disposed of there? People like this should be fined heavily or made to go and pick it all up. if only they can be caught..but then these type of people are ignorant, and just don't care, as long as they've had a good time..

I despair and i'm not going to come back on here to write again. .

I asked person emptying bins to have a look the other side of the huge oak tree next to the tennis courts, where a pile of wine bottles, soda bottles, food packets and other detritus has been for almost a week. Someone sat their with friends or family, ate and drank, then got up and made the decision to leave the trash they had brought with them right there on the grass. this has now been cleaned-up.

Thing is the bins are being emptied and there's some attention to the areas visible form the pavement, but out-of-sight areas don't seem to be being patrolled for litter. Hence these festering piles of trash you come across when walking around edge of park.

I don't understand the attitude that it is wrong to employ someone to help keep a park tidy. Swings and roundabouts.

The bins are being emptied daily. If the bins are full you should find another bin or take the rubbish home with you. It's not rocket science that food waste left lying around a bin will be ripped open by foxes and other wildlife and strewn by the wind etc. The people who empty the bins should not have to scour the area sweeping up detritus left by selfish anti-social idiots. It makes the park unpleasant for the majority who do the right thing.

I can see why after a hot day, some rubbish is left on the common. Once bins are full, where are you supposed to put your rubbish? It obviously goes on the floor beside the bin or somewhere else easily found by council employees the next day. If it was a big problem, the council would install more bins, but they dont so it cannot be much bother for a few cleaners to go around the park the next day tidying the place up again. We do pay our council tax after all!

Personally, im sure i have left empty cans and fag butts on the floor where i was sat, but that is only because im too drunk to care anymore, all the other times i do actually have the decency to pick my rubbish up.

Its 'large ugly bins' or rubbish on the common- what would you rather? Take your pick.

They have big green bins on Clapham Common over the summer, no doubt you'd say these were 'ugly' (?!), but helps keep the litter in check. Southwark council could certainly learn a thing or two from their Lambeth neighbours.

Yes, the pragmatist in me agrees. It is not just unsightly to have rubbish everywhere (and surely more unsightly than a bin, however ugly?)but if bags do get torn open, the rubbish escapes and presents a threat to wildlife. I think some reminders next to the bins that it's not ok to leave rubbish when full might nudge some people into doing the right thing but many would still disregard. I think some large bins of the type used by Lambeth, near main exits, would go a long way to solving the problem and wouldn't intrude too much on the main body of the park...
RachP, the idealist in me would love to see people taking their rubbish home, but obviously that is not happening so I think a more practical solution is needed! I suggested the same to Southwark council on Twitter, who gave me a sarcastic response, which obviously was not helpful!
