There is no breach of current law when a retailer splits a multipack to sell items individually, once the correct price is displayed. Shops must display the selling price of Every item offered for sale. ...

Update

We the retailers have now asked southwark council to help with CCTV installation. Yesterday we witnessed a guy walking out of COOP supermarket with 3 bottles of unpaid whiskey. Subsequently he was confronted by the staff at the coop, which resulted in the bottles smashing on the floor. Police were called, however with CCTV, that guy would off been caught. We have had a number of bike thefts, including a lady today, who's bike was stolen.

Co-op on Lordship lane absolutely have CCTV, there is sporadic announcements advising that Mitie (an external security company) are constantly monitoring the system, and in addition there is 1 and sometimes 2 security guards in the shop.


Can i just check why anyone would actually care if people nick a few bits from a major supermarket retailer? it has no effect on you whatsoever, why waste your time worrying about it? It must be nice not having to worry about money but some people do, and shoplifting (victimless crime) is a good way to make up for the lack of benefits and social help this country now provides for those down in doldrums.

It does have an effect on us actually. Shops need to compensate for the amount of thefts by putting up their prices. And a lot of stuff being nicked is not "basic essentials". I saw a young guy in M&S put 2 bottles of champagne into a plastic bag and start to walk out. When the security guard challenged him, his mother started screaming "he's my son - call the police then - I dont care" ........

I can't imagine these people live locally, as there's always a chance they'll run into a friend, neighbour, client, co-worker... No dignity whatsoever.


Shoplifting happens so frequently in Tesco's {East Dulwich Road} & Co-Op {Lordship Lane} I'm shocked they haven't installed CCTV by now. Then again, they are quite laid back in their approach to dealing with these situations too, as I've witnessed in both locations.


The majority of my clients have Ring installed. Many residents have some form of security camera installed. So there's absolutely no excuse for why these supermarkets cannot install a security camera at their entrance.

Shoplifting like every crime has victims, irrespective of the shoplifting taking place in a supermarket or a small shop. As a Retailer I have experienced shoplifting, where I have had to escort the shoplifters off the premises. We have received forged bank notes, where I have had to explain to the person acting all innocent when they are trying to give us a fake 50, that I can tear the note up or call the police.

Our local neighbourhood police have been amazing, they have been at the coop waiting on the security guard to arrive for their shift, keeping an eye on the store.

Lordship Lane and Northcross Rd need CCTV, we have been here on the lane for 20 years. Over the years we have seen ED evolve and become a destination area, however with that we have also seen crime increase. A lady who's bike was stolen the other day, was in hysterics, the bike was her lifeline.

Why do you keep implying that Lordship Lane does not have CCTV? Are you deliberately being obtuse for some reason?


Walk down Lordship Lane and take a proper look- there is CCTV clear as day at the end of long poles. Off the top of my head there is one opposite the Bishop outside that hippy charity shop. London is one of the most heavily covered CCTV cities in the world by far- do you think that Lordship Lane gets off with not having any cameras for the prevention of crime? Additionally, one of my previous posts explains Co-op's security arrangements, which includes CCTV.

If you don't care you're probably breaking the insurance contract - you have to at least give some show of caring ?

Presumably because it's a slippery slope rather than any direct effect for most people. I would say we've got away with lack of any police or police stations for the last few years because the general economic situation has been ok.


If we get much higher unemployment (9.5m on furlough at the moment) and people get more desperate, once it becomes clear the police aren't there to enforce and stop shoplifting or any other petty crime, things will escalate and then probably get seriously ugly.


Riots and looting, probably huge spike in violent muggings, assaults and worse. The 70s and 80s were a much tougher time economically as well and had much higher rates of crime as well, though London had the Police infrastructure to deal with it then.


If politicians think it's not their problem, they're going to be in for a rather nasty surprise I think...

Are you ok? You keep demanding the council spends money on something that is already there. Stop sensationalising a few people stealing some booze from the shops of Lordship Lane, we are in a borough with one of the highest knife crime rates in London- get a grip.

I was categorically told by southwark council AND the police that there is no CCTV in east dulwich - the cameras you may see are TFL ones for the monitoring of traffic flow but these are not recorded in that they can be accessed after an event.


I was tryng to track a stolen car and was unable to find ANY cameras recording.


apparently there are routes thru london that are not tracked so are known as preferred routes for a clean getaway.

And has no issue with the fortune it costs the council to clean up the parks because apparently he can't be bothered to take his rubbish away when the bin is full. At least keep your views in some way consistent if you are intent on winding people up!
