I found this interesting:

http://gardenofeaden.blogspot.co.uk/2009/01/which-native-animals-eat-slugs-and.html

So, frogs and toads are good predators of slugs and snails. We have a very small pond, but in 2 years we've only seen one frog. We have trouble keeping the pond clean b/c it is so small. It doesn't seem to support a good nitrogen cycle. Any suggestions?

Don't kill the snails - they help keep your pond clean as they eat the plant debris in it.

Slugs are different. I have an occasional slug night involving a bucket of very hot, salty water. I don't think they feel any pain and I find it strangely satisfying.

I recently found out by accident that being dropped onto concrete from a reasonable height will also do the trick.

Yes, the little black pointy snails are a differnt genus. They live near water and don't munch your flower beds or seedlings. We have these around our pond this summer, an improvement over last summer when the pond went septic.

The large, round, brown snails are not at all aquatic, and I scoop dead ones out of the pond not infreqently. I think they fall off overhanging plants then drown. Ugh. Sometimes there is a dead bloated slug in the pond too. UGH.

    • Which is a perfectly legitimate political position to take and somewhat parallels the (equally legitimate) 'I hate Tories' or  'I love Labour' positions taken by other posters. Or indeed 'I hate car drivers and owners' or 'I love cyclists' positions frequently paraded.
    • There have been people fairly recently killed by having apparently healthy trees  in parks fall on them. The council tree people like trees. They don't remove trees without a very good reason. To talk about "mutilating the neighbourhood" and "reckless unconcern for the law" seems a bit harsh when you don't know the background. Why don't you find out why these trees have been/will be removed ? It's quite easy. A phone call will probably tell you:
    • And accommodation for servants too.   Grouse shooting?  Sorry, it's easy to take the Michael.  I've been peering at a hole in the ground on Woodhall Drive a private road in West Dulwich.  There used to be a £2million house there but expect something far grander.  Although it's been a big hole for some time now.  I have a legit reason to be on that road and always wave to the CCTV.
    • Thanks for posting this, I've always been intrieged by that house having glimpsed it passing by..It truly is the dream
