nina_maniana
Wondering if in light of the latest government advice whether pubs and restaurants in the area will stay open? Working from home is fine but having nowhere to go to break it up will be tough (though understandably maybe necessary) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/251074-pubs-and-restaurants-to-close/ Share on other sites

edcam
Yet again the government put their interests (insurance industry) first by putting the onus on consumers to NOT go to pubs, restaurants, theatres, etc., instead of making it a rule and enabling at least some of them to claim. diable rouge
Exactly edcam. The ineptitude of Johnson and his Gov during this crisis gets worse with each passing day. By giving advice rather than forcing people not to go to pubs/restaurants/theatres etc he has hung out to dry thousands of businesses, giving them no legal recourse to claim with their insurers for the inevitable losses and liquidations that will follow. France by contrast has promised no business no matter how small will suffer financially. He has well and truly f*cked business like he said... nina_maniana
Sue - i think there?s a difference between being packed on a tube for the commute and spending all day in a crowded office versus meeting a friend for lunch and avoiding unnecessary contact? I understand why the government would want places closed but for my own peace of mind i would definitely be comfortable with going to some social spaces. My question was more, based on the government?s loose form of words around closures whether businesses would tend to stay open pending a formal edict by which they could actually claim insurance? Earl Aelfheah
Everyone should be staying home. The government need to order pubs and restaurants to close so they can clean insurance. This is not being treated anywhere near seriously enough. I think a walk may still be OK - and maybe something will be arranged. Other than that expand your social and video media to have virtual breaks with friends if you're lucky enough to have them. malumbu
I'm pleased not to be in France under their martial rule. Not a fan of Bojo but at least I can exercise my own judgement about socialising. I sense that many would whinge on this site whatever government did. There is the bigger issue of maintaining some sort of business as usual, economic impact, our well being in terms of being social animals, and the health consequences. History will tell. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/251074-pubs-and-restaurants-to-close/#findComment-1409748 Share on other sites

malumbu
We are spending 15% of GDP in the short term, to avoid overwhelming the NHS and 1000s if not 1000s of avoidable deaths. Am I being stupid? This does not appear to be putting the economy first. Can you lot not see beyond a knee jerk response of believing that everything this government does is wrong? Irony is that he will come out of this even stronger....If you want to have a proper whinge here is one - what a stupid time to have left the EU. Blah Blah
Yes and no malumbu. Where I would agree with you is in that this is a fast moving situation that waits for no man. It is an enormously difficult task to put in all the safeguards needed overnight. But at the same time, they have been too slow to the gate, hence the sudden onslaught of concern from just about every sector of the economy and society. Time for them to get moving now.Personally, I think if anyone is likely to mess it up, its Boris. His gaff 'operation last gasp' yesterday being a case in point. He lacks the self awareness and empathy to really connect with what ordinary people are about to go through. So his best bet is to focus on resources and logistics, and making sure everyone has what they need, and leave the quips and clowning at the door. People have also got to play their part, understand the seriousness of this virus and do as asked. Going to a pub is not a safe thing to do. Because even if you are socially distanced, the table you sit at, the chair you move to sit down on, could easily have just been vacated by someone with the virus that coughed all over it. The only environment you have control over, is your home. And to be blunt. There are going to be people around you that die and you will be shocked it was them. We will all hear people say, 'I never realised it was so serious', 'I never thought I could lose so and so like this'. This is very much the calm before the storm. Things are absolutely going to become very serious within weeks. diable rouge
I don't believe the Gov is putting the economy first (leaving the EU proves that), and I also don't believe in daft conspiracy theories that it's some kind of organised cull, especially as those most at risk are likely to be their core voters. But what I do know is that successive Tory Govs of which this PM and many senior ministers were active in, have deliberately underfunded the NHS and social care among others as part of an unnecessary 10-year austerity programme. There's no argument to be had that had they not done that then we would be in a better position to cope than we currently are. We can't suddenly magic up all the nurses, doctors, beds and equipment that has been lost in that time. Germany, a country similar in size has 4 times as many ICUs and recently ordered 10,000 extra ventilators. Our Gov meanwhile is sending blueprints on how to make a ventilator to various manufacturing companies asking them to knock out a job lot i.e. Operation Last Gasp...
