Blue Mountain Cafe

I managed to get on their Facebook page and there was nothing on there pertaining to what's happening with the East Dulwich branch. I asked at the branch in Kirkade Road and the worker told me he didn't know and I should ask the manager but he was unavailable.

I have function coming up and want to use the East Dulwich branch. Personally, I feel if they have closed due to refurbishment the work would have already started. A few businesses around East Dulwich have shut or closed and re-opened under new names...

Anyway, thanks for suggestion. I'll find alternative venue.

Just called Blue Mountain in Sydenham. Mel was out. The worker I spoke to said the East Dulwich Blue Mountain won't be re-opening for a long time... Apparently, this is due to refurbishment-plans of moving the kitchen from upstairs to downstairs, opening up the garden, etc.

There goes my birthday party!

Wow. That's some serious work Mel's doing there. Moving the whole kitchen will require a massive change to the place.

I worked there very briefly many years ago, and have to say that's a good plan. Mel must be doing well if he can afford this.

Good luck to him. Glad one of ED's longest running independents is doing well enough to justify this. That kitchen was always a nightmare to work in!

Mmm....not so sure. I think there's more to this than meets the eye. Mel should be honest with the public as alot of resdidents in East Dulwich have supported the cafe and in some ways it is a landmark!

I am not sure what is going on but the worker at Sydenham said to me the East Dulwich branch won't open "for a very long time" and the cafe's Facebook page is blank petaining to info. To me it came across as the worker was being polite by really meaning "Blue Mountain is closed for good" as she was trying to convince me to hold my function in Sydenham.

It would have been nice of Mel to thank his customers and do a proper goodbye than close the cafe in this manner. Anyway, I wish him and the staff all the best.

oh dont be so negative , I know mel and he is having this work done with the kitchen ; he told me 4 months as it is a big job ! he wouldnt just close and vanish . blue mountain have been telling their customers for weeks now its happening theyve been around for years and will be for many more !
Just walked down Northcross and able to report that there was chink of light under the blinds at Blue Mountain and I am delighted to say that evidence of a refurbishment is very very present - lots of ladders, tools etc etc. Can't wait to see the new place - lots of luck to Mel and the team. WE MISS YOU :-)

I agree, I loved those little rooms, especially the red one :)

It was never the same after they opened the whole place up ......

I happened to go in the day they were closing down (lucky!) in August. The plan was to extend into the garden so it's all covered and obviously refurbing everything downstairs (including things like removing the fridge which was taking up too much space). Upstairs is going to be converted into a flat apparently, so BM will only be on the ground floor.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend Jacks on Pellatt Road for a fry up/coffee/breakfast - I haven't been there yet? I miss BM!

Hi devsdev

Shame you didn't make it for our breakfasts! Peggy's Hangover Cure was a winner. It got us 5 red Stars in Time Out and shortlisted into the Top 10 cafes in London 2011 & 2012 with London Lifestyle Awards. We closed in July because the space we had wasn't big enough for what we wanted to do. We are looking for bigger premises but in the mean time you will catch us at all the good artisan food markets in London from November.

Get yourself over to Brockley market on a Saturday 10-2pm they have fantastic food n coffee! ;))

    • We went there yesterday for lunch, which was really delicious and excellent value. A starter plus a main is £11.95 for their "lunchtime special". Just a main is £8.95. We had excellent gyozas to start, then I had pad thai and my partner had a stir fry, both with tofu. They were large helpings,  freshly cooked, with fresh veg. There is the option to have chicken or beef (prawns are £2 extra) Also they now have Thai beer (Singha) on draught or in bottles (previously it was being your own alcohol). The service was also good. We were sorry and surprised not to see more people in there, particularly as there was a match on. It is really worth the short walk from Lordship Lane!
