Stiffleruk22 I dont think they are saying that but are just listening to suggestions and try something new. Personally i like the football in a pub and for the location of the Vale it would work and did. There arent any places doing live music but it was tried in the Vale and failed completely. maybe they will just have to try trial an error and see what fits best. The bishop does fine without a televison but they appeal to a different type of person and are the only place to more sell wine than beer so get away with it.

The Great Exhibition has Live Music (weekly)

I believe The Rose has Live Music.

The Bishop has a projector and Large Screen.

Has Shown most of the Olympics. Shows Major Sports events.

Fox.

I have watched many a football game in The Bishop. It is a bit Selective.

The Actress also shows Football and has one of the best screens around.

Oh while I'm here.. Just passed the EDT and they have a Live Band on 17.30ish..

It's packed out.

Have you ever been to any of the pubs in E.D.

It only works for some kinds of (louder) music, or if the musicians are sufficiently thick skinned not to care that many of the people in the pub are not actually listening to them :)

Because if people haven't paid for a ticket, you can't expect them not to carry on loud conversations - which is very distracting for those who are actually trying to listen to the music, unless the music is quite loud!

Good luck to you - I have lived nearby for nearly 8 years and have never fancied going in the Vale before - now it sounds like I would definitely want to go in with the changes afoot - but I'm leaving ED in 2 weeks! Shame! Will have to see about popping in on a future ED visit I guess.

Hi Chris and Antonia. As you will see from the feedback on the forum, you have no hope of recovering from the bad name that the Vale has got from Bernard Manning and the old grey haired git. Not sure how you got finance for this venture, but all will regret the investment. Of course not commenting on both of your abilities, but venturing to steer a SHIP that is holed below the water-line is pure madness, in my view. My advice would be to abandon the vessel and stay at your present pub.

Hi Yellowfence

Nice to see that you have just registered on the forum to post this.

i get the feeling some people simply view this thread as a last chance to have a bitch at the formers chaps.

i started it with the intent of informing people of change and requested peoples positive input.

if you bothered to read the thread you would have seen that we have received many encouraging comments.

while i fully appreciate that there are some negative comments with regard to the former gentlemen, these should be left in the past - where and when they may have been relevant.

We plan to bring change and fresh faces to brighten the pubs future.

Those who wish to see such a future shall be very welcome - those who wish to be unnecessarily negative will probably find this is not the pub for them.

Thanks very much to all of you who have been positive, as for those who have been negative i sincerely wish you all a more positive future.

What a nasty, negative and unnecessary post Yellowfence!

It's also ignorant. Anyone remember the previous incarnation of the (hugely successful) Palmerston? The Lord Palmerston was a hideous net-curtained hovel full of chain-smoking shell-suited men.

Good luck to Chris and Antonia, the majority want you to succeed and rest assured if it's good, people will come.

The people you are refering to are the owners not managers and the people that are supposedley taking over will be doing so under the same ownership, hence all profits still going to them. Anybody that has met these owners know it will be impossible for them not to get involved. I wish the managers the best of luck as they are going to need it.

Back on topic - the place is going through some fairly extensive refurbs - kitchen closed, real ale pumps and lines being replaced, exterior being repainted, new wooden floor laid down etc

The new setup might be a partnership more than a complete change of owner but it's clearly nothing like previous "new manager" installations. It's looking very promising and I'll be checking it out plenty

Sorry, just to clarify - there is no footy?

Good to hear that there will be an overhaul of the food and so on as that really did let the place down. I never had a run in with the managment so couldn't comment, though the Irish barman in there the last time we went was fantastic.

I got excited re the overhaul of food etc as I used to get treated to lunch/dinner at the pub in return for my OH being able to watch the football!

Why do men always have to offer a "deal" to get to watch football. It is a right not a privelege :)

    • I had no idea about the sourcing of the paving stones - where is the info on this? The extension of the paved area seems completely unjustified- plus, there is a cycle lane right thru the middle so there are bound to be some near misses with pedestrians.
    • That's really awful. There must be someone further up the management chain who could be made aware of this?
    • I'm assuming that anybody who has a cat can afford  its food, litter, vets' fees etc. Nobody was saying that two quid is "nothing", but it's cheaper than some brands of cat litter, so was hopefully useful to the OP. Still, hopefully your post made you feel better 👍 🤣 We still don't know why there was a bag of cat litter at the bus stop! Surely it would be rather difficult to take it away unnoticed if the owner of the cat litter was  also at the bus stop? It's not like someone distracted your attention and picked your pocket and you didn't notice till some time later! But what is also confusing me is, if the OP knows where the thief lives, why don't they go and ask for their cat litter back?
    • The market is only there for a few hours on Saturdays! Surely all street markets are "a bit tatty"! That seems a strange reason to close a road permanently to traffic!  There is already at least one seat  in North Cross Road (which seems to be quite well used),  apart from those for customers of The Palmerston,  and several of the shops in the road have greenery outside
