I bought my goddaughter some Katie Morag books by Marie Hedderwick, set on a ficitonal Scottish island, I used to read these as a girl about the same age: http://www.randomhouse.co.uk/editions/more-katie-morag-island-stories/9781849410908

Milly Molly Mandy books are also great, also what about Shirley Hughes - my naughty little sister etc?

Enid Blyton definitely a great read... Is Nancy Drew author British? Hmm... Secret Garden? Might be a bit old but can be read to her. Or just look generally on Amazon and book websites like Waterstones, they often have great recommendations and you can sift by age.

You're probably sorted now, but in case useful for reference:

The Booktrust website has a "book finder" which allows you to search for recommended children's books by age group and genre.

Great suggestions everybody, thanks so much! I loved Enid Blyton as a child and amazing to know that she's stood the test of time. I greatly enjoyed re-reading the Faraway Tree books with my older boys. Love the sound of Sara Ogilvie and Jill Murphy's books and will check out those links too.
