exdulwicher
dbboy Wrote:-----------------------------> > Does anyone have any information about where the> name Dog Kennel Hill originates from? From a London history website:One theory for the name is that Prince George of Denmark had kennels for his hounds here. However, Edward Alleyn, the Elizabethan actor, owned much of what was, at the time, the manor of Dulwich and some of the land here was recorded as Kennels, Kennoldes Croft and Kennold?s Acre. That means a more likely theory is that an earlier landowner (date unknown), one Monsieur de Canel, resided there, and Dog Kennel is a heavily anglicized version of his name. dbboy
Thanks, I've never known how it got it's name. Any other info gratefully received Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/247652-trams-incl-dog-kennel-hill/#findComment-1399724 Share on other sites
hammerman
Always thought it got it's name (Dog Kennel Hill) from the kennels that used to be at the top of the hill, roughly on the site of Dog Kennel Hill school. I've seen pictures of the kennels in old history books and on postcards on ebay over the years. kiera
It has always been understood locally that Dog Kennel Hill was so named because hunting dogs were housed on it. The side roads off Dog Kennel Hill have all been named after hunts e.g. Quorn Road. sue k
and i think, Elsie Rd and what was, Constance Rd (now St Francis Rd) were named after the daughters of someone i think who owned land around here..but also found out that Constance was the 2nd wife of Edward Alleyn Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/247652-trams-incl-dog-kennel-hill/#findComment-1400814 Share on other sites
fishbiscuits
And speaking of long-gone transport infrastructure... Lordship Lane station. Of course you can still see some of the old route and tunnel in Dulwich woods. Jason painter
There used to be kennels on the bottom of the hill (left side) as you go up. I've seen an old sketch in the Southwark archives.
