Michael Palaeologus
I have read the threads re the places that do a good Sunday lunch - Rye Hotel, Nuns Head, Bishop, etc. Strangely I have only ever done Sunday lunch at the Crown & Greyhound and the Star cafe on Peckham Rye (I dont think that they do this anymore), but this Sunday that will change. I have friends with me at the moment, one of whom is Veggie. So, do any of the recommended Sunday lunch venues also do a good Veggie option? Ta. Cassius
I think the Sunday veggie lunch at the Nun's Head is good. Although some people might think veggie nut roast is a cop-out I much prefer it to veggie sausages and mash. I am not a pure enough veggie to ask if the gravy is veggie but maybe your friend isn't either. As far as I can remember the Rye Hotel does the veggie sausage option - but again that might suit your friend.Hope this helps - and if you go elsewhere and it is a success do let us know, I'd love to try somewhere else. wee quinnie
Well I am a veggie and love the Rye hotel - altho I always have the same thing - the veggie mezze and spring rolls. God I am salivating just writing this. I wouldn't go to the Forest Hill Tavern - I went there recently and had a quite revolting lunch. Knomester
I've only had veggie 'Sunday roasts' at The Bishop and The Herne so far and would recommend both. The Bishop's offering was veggie toad in the hole with the same roasties and veg as the meat Sunday roast and veggie gravy - I think it's nice to be able to eat the same veg etc rather than something totally different like mushroom risotto or wild mushroom pasta... I've only eaten at The Herne once (although it is my new local so will no doubt frequent it more now...) but the veggie option was good - a caramelised onion and lancashire cheese tart served with a rocket salad. Not quite so 'Sunday roast'-like but very good all the same. northernmonkey
I've said this before, but think that the Nun's Head is the best Sunday lunch around especially for veggie options. I'm not convinced that toad in the hole is a great option - doesn't exactly go with yorkshire puddings and as a veggie my common complaint is that when I'm going out with friends who are all tucking into a roast dinner, I don't really want a risotto- I want a 'sunday lunch' too!!! Think that nut loaf is considered to be a bit dated now - but actually goes really well with roast veg and gravy - plus the gravy on the nun's head Sunday lunches is different from the meat ones so am assuming its veggie. Good value too - plus they usually have live jazz on which is a nice touch! benjaminty
check out the montpelier on choumert grove .... think 3 veggie options were on last sunday. (one of which was toad in the whole admittedly) but the veggie options looked good. The pork roast I had has to beat anything I've had around Lordship hands down... Keef
I know I'm late in writing this (where did you go by the way?) but Mrs Keef said the roast she had at The Plough was very good, and it was cheaper than most down the bottom of Lordship Lane. Michael Palaeologus
Thanks all. We went to the Bishop. The Veggie Toad was concidered to be "very good" and my friend appreciated the fact that he was eating a proper Sunday lunch with the rest of us - who had beef, which was also good. SteveT
Went to the Rye last night and my daughter had the butternut squash risotto and it was enjoyable but about ?9 odd so not a snip. I had bangers and mash with delicious red cabbage very fulfilling neither of us could cope with desert. I asked what they did to the red cabbage as it was better than I make at home, they melt a little sugar in vinegar and add to it, it was excellent. wee quinnie
Argh! Just got a bit mixed up, and went to The Plough for veggie Sunday lunch - and it was v v ordinary. Then I got home and realised it was The Bishop I had been thinking about. Damn. Oh well, now I know. The wine was quite good though.
