We are next door neighbours to the Great Exhibition and are already affected by the levels of noise under existing licensing conditions.

We will be writing to the Council objecting the granting of this license. I encourage neighbours in the area who, like me, have concerns about this issue to write to the Council by thursday (no later please). We are worried that given short deadline and summer holidays not many people will write - so please I encourage all concerned neighbours to do the same. Don't assume that this will be sorted out, please try and play your part.

Thanks!

Why would the Council grant the license? Surely our elected representatives have some common sense. If not then use your vote the next time to make sure you get someone who has some common sense. It's a residential area. What idiot would grant them an extended license and why the hell are they asking if they would like to be a local friendly pub?

AGAINST:

I'm writing to object to the change to extend licensing hours at The Great Exhibition public house. The pub is situated in the middle of a residential area very popular with families and very close to housing. I believe local residents will suffer disturbing levels of nuisance noise in to the early hours which will disturb sleep of adults and children.

Even with best efforts from the Landlord, noise on leaving the pub is inevitable. It will encourage an after hours drinking crowd who would normally drink on the predominately non-residental areas of Lordship Lane where noise levels are less of an issue. I believe The Great Exhibiton serves the community well as a pub keeping 'regular' pub hours and not as a 'nightclub' style late license establishment.

AGAINST:

I would really urge all local residents (and sympathetic residents in the surrounding streets) to object to this.

Existing problems:

Tuesday quiz night with a loud microphone.

Bands with drums & brass instruments on Thursdays. Both these issues are compounded by no sound proofing / thin glass in the pub, and leaving the doors open.

Loose interpretation of existing licensing hours - no apparent effort to get customers to disperse, and then dragging wooden benches around when teh pub shuts.

The proposal would leave the pub open to 12.30am Sunday to Wednesday, and 2.30am Thursday to Saturday. Most people not in the hospitality industry will get up for work between 6-7am - that implies on Friday morning the noise only stopping 3-4 hours before!

The owners have already shown themselves to be inconsiderate to the community around them. The fact that they should even suggest this amended licence emphasises this.

Not only should we object to this proposal, we should raise the existing behaviour to the council to enforce more considerate practices. I'm all in favour of new establishments in the area, but this has to be within the bounds of decency for a residential area.

The Council has so far received 6 objections. Would be great if we got to 10 to make sure we are heard by Thursday! If you haven't logged in your objection please do so, it would really help.

Please include this information:

- your name and signature

- your address details

- the date you wrote the letter

- the application that you are opposed to (The licence reference application is 838498)

- the reasons why you are opposed to the application

We are also drafting a petition for all sympathetic residents to sign - please PM me if you want to add your name to this.

Thanks!

6 objections to the council is pathetic.

Coming onto the forum and ranting is meaningless. You need to either write or phone or email to the council about this - before it is too late - deadline approaching. Contact details are on an earlier post.

Seriously, don't come on here complaining that you can't get to sleep because of the noise at the Great Exhibition when you've sat back and done nothing about this ridiculous licence extension application.

Having written to the licensing people in the past re Hoopers (though that was in support of Hoopers, not objecting), if I recall correctly all the information appears in due course on the licensing committee's webpage, together with all the letters received (with names, addresses and other contact details removed) in each case.

Giggigirl is right. Get the objections into the licensing department. Personally I think it unlikely the application will be successful anyway. The location of the premises within a residential area will have a strong bearing on any decision made and the licensing committee are not in the habit of granting late licenses to premises in such close proximity to residential areas. I can't see the Thursday extension being granted under any circumstances and I suspect any weekend extension may come with requirements regarding soundproofing and security, but again, the more objections pointing out the residential aspect of the location, the better.

Thanks to all the neighbors who today signed the petition. We got more than 50 sign ons of people in Crystal Palace rd, Underhill rd and Whateley rd. We are having a meeting with the Council tomorrow, we'll keep you in the loop.

It did surprise me how many people expressed concerns about the existing noise situation, as well as worried about the prospects of an extended license. We do hope that this whole issue makes the management of the pub realise that they can do things better to ensure we can all enjoy the neighborhood. We clearly all love the Great Exhibition and no doubt it's a great improvement from the previous, CPT. We do love having Sunday roasts and having a drink in the terrace. But clearly, compared to other pubs in the area, like The Actress, more can be done to get it right.

This is obviously not over. There will be a preliminary decision on Thursday and then a hearing in August. Please if you haven't yet written to the Council do so before Thursday.

Thanks for all your support!

Oh well that settles it then, they MAY not open all the time, so might as well give 'em the licence.

Because having got the licence, they MAY want to NOT put on music, MAY not want to open late, MAY not want to have dancing after all, MAY not want to try make more money, but they'll be happy knowing they could if they wanted to.

I agree KK. Any notion that the application is for 'occasional' use is nonsensical. There are things called 'temporary events licences' for such 'occasional' need for extensions to opening hours. Noise is more disturbing the later it is, and the quieter the area it occurs in, normally is. This is why night clubs and music venues are usually away from residential property or have some internal soundproofing if they want to be open through the night. That is also the reason why breaches of existing licences also matter, especially when provisions for noise control demanded by the conditions of the licence are ignored.

Have you been drinking in Scotland???

Well, it's Wednesday morning as I write, and as several others have said over the last couple of days, if you want to have your views heard by Southwark Council then do make sure you contact them (details in earlier posts) by TOMORROW, THURSDAY 2 AUGUST.

Not sure if there is a cut-off time but if you can do it during the council's normal working hours then that is a good idea.

And after all this encouragement from other posters, it's about time I put in my own formal comments.

I have also objected to this application - for all of the good reasons listed above. However, there seems to be a problem with the Southwark website and I got several script errors when trying to access the information. This means last minute objectors may not have been able to lodge an appeal due to not being able to access the requisite info.

I have made Southwark aware and instead objected by straight email....

That's correct, I had problems a few days ago..

Here is the email address to prevent anyone having to wade through all of this thread.

Foxy

If you want to submit comments to Southwark Council, today is the last day.

The Southwark website is still throwing up all sorts of script errors - unless these get fixed soon (and even if they get fixed), you may want to email directly:

[email protected]

quoting reference number 838498

Given their IT problems, it's probably worth asking for a confirmation that they have received your email. And if your email system can provide delivery receipts then do request one (I know Microsoft Outlook has this facility). Then there need be no problem about them denying ever having received an email (I speak from Southwark Council experience).

Or you can try telephone: 020 7525 5748 - not sure what is the status of telephoned objections though.

I've formally objected. Been meaning to do this for ages. I know my ward colleagues are planning to formally object.

Really ill considered application adding extra 3 hours of opening Thurs, Fri and Sat nights as well as all bank holidays. Talk of a new courtyard for drinking presumably until 2.30am but no mention of a noise report to confirm noise wont disturb neighbours.

Once this application is out the way I'd like nearby residents to confirm or deny that the outside area being used until 23.30 every night is a problem or not. If it is I'll ask for a licence review.

Haha, yeah I can see that happening.

Notwithstanding I do like The Great Exhibition - but as has been said above that's not the point. I reckon all live music in neighborhood type areas after 11.30pm should be confined to the main/high streets. That still gives enough time for any band to get a decent set in - and a few beers after.
