I found this recently - Penny Farthing Race at Herne Hill in 1928. Is the footage speeded up or were their legs really moving that fast?

The bits which don't show racing all appear to be at a reasonable speed, so I'm guessing they did go like the clappers when racing.

I don?t think it?s speeded up, it?s a fix gear bike, so you need to go like the clappers.

The guy at the end has a very ?now? haircut, with a close fade to the crown. 👍🏽

The ?now? haircut is influenced by Peaky Blinders set about that time.

Thank you for posting this. I teach and we can see the Velodrome from our classroom. The children will love watching it, and will no-doubt find it hilarious.

Super-endurance rider Mark Beaumont tried to break the penny farthing hour record last year at Herne Hill:
