travelling with 2 kids, baby and pram on Virgin train...Anyone done it?

We travel frequently to the coast to pick up /drop off my daughter - so some journeys it's just the adults.

We're still allowed to travel with the family railcard without my daughter present (obviously we've paid for a return journey with her).

The alternative being we buy a single (2 adults one child) and then a return single (2 adults) - which is far more expensive. The conductor on the train told us about it.
