Anywhere local to take Christmas cake?

I have around half a Christmas cake (made by my sister).

Am I right in thinking that food banks won't take it because it isn't shop bought and sealed?

If so, is there any other place I could take it?

I won't eat any more of it, I assume it's bad for birds and ducks, and I don't want to waste it :(

Don't think food banks will take it for the reason you state. Other than putting it in your food waste bin you could chuck out some for the crows. The pair I've been feeding since they were young have finished off some Christmas Pud I left out yesterday. They were very vocal at my kitchen window this morning so they must have enjoyed it!

Cake with dried fruit and high fat content are ideal for wild birds.

However dried fruit and mince pies are dangerous for dogs (Poisonous) which may also be bad for Foxes,

even though they are very different from dogs.

There's a brilliant food sharing app called Olio - food and non-food items can be given away for free. Includes homemade and past 'best before' date foods.

You could ask Peckham FoodCycle (peckham@foodcycle.org.uk, based at All Saints church) if they could use any Christmas cake?

If you're not crazy about Christmas cake, you can make very tasty "rocky road" out of it. Crumble it up, stir in melted chocolate and a little butter, and whatever else you have (leftover biscuits, popcorn, marshmallows, cornflakes, etc). When set, you can cut it up and freeze it.. take portions out of the freezer if/when you have family/kids round. Put chocolate mini eggs on top and serve as Easter cakes, etc.

Thanks all, I had forgotten about Olio, will try that and Peckham Food Cycle first.

Or I may try putting some out for the birds to see if they will eat it (though they turned their noses/beaks up at sourdough bread I put out :)) :)) :)) )

The problem with freezing it or otherwise keeping it in the house in any form is that I will eat it.

And I have already doubled my body weight (or it feels like it) and poisoned myself with too much sugar over the festive season :)) :)) :))

Well they might if they were short of money and food.

I hate wasting food so just started this thread on the off chance, as I don't want to just bin a perfectly good half a cake!

Yep... it's good. My mum always gives us a huge chunk of Christmas cake, but the rest of the family don't really like it, so this is usually how it ends up. And there's always other xmas leftovers you can throw in.. chocolate, nuts, biscuits, etc.

Most likely defeats Sue's desire NOT to eat more cake, but it?s just a thought.

I don't think it's got nuts in it, but it does have a lot of fruit.

KK has had half of the half a cake.

The birds have had a slice of the rest (waiting to see if they eat it before putting out any more).

My partner and I had a slice each last night. Our willpower may have been weakened by alcohol :))

There's still some left ......
