Having had both cats and dogs in my life can say that both have their pros and cons. There really are more important things to worry about than whether a night time wandering cat is giving the bird to a couple of dogs.....geez.

Day or night, cats will wander, just as some dogs will bark at them and other won't.

I have had four cats and trained them to stay indoors at night. I've also had six rabbits that I trained to use a litter tray. Animals will do what you tell them if you spend a bit of time laying done the rules.

I hate that more important things to worry about line, of course there are but it's the EDF not the world economic forum, so get over yourself. Why arent you out doing important things instead of preaching the freedom of cats to roam and kill act. If you've got a bunch of cats camping in your backyard your answer to the dog owner is to train it not to bark at the cats in their territory....your funny. If you havent had a full nights sleep for weeks because of these free spirited cats you might not be so judgemental.

Oh and how does a cat bury its crap in a fully decked garden?

How about you go and contemplate these "more important things" rather than bother yourself with pushing the whole pro cat campaign? Find it odd when people are compelled to join a discussion which is clearly very minor in the big scheme of things then say its pointless. If you haven't noticed, it's not mandatory to contribute.

Only if they are deferring to another animal (and that includes humans). If they want to mark what they consider disputed territory, they leave it on the surface. I've never worried about the typical idignation of some posters to opposing views any forum. How cats and dogs view territory is different to how us far more destructive humans view the overpriced bit of garden and brick and mortar some of us enslave our lives around.

I completely accept your point Loz. The truth of it all is that too many of us live in too small a space and whilst we set boundaries for ourselvs as humans, animals don't. If it's not cats, it's foxes. If it's not foxes it's something else. Some people expect the tranquility of a rural outpost......just simply not realistic in a mega city.

You know I read a while back that a fox got into a house and attacked a baby in its cot, but hey it's just scavenging right I mean the stupid mother expecting the fox to see a nursery as a boundary, idiot. It's one of the reasons that i i happy for my dogs to let me know if something is in our backyard, fox, cat or human that is the reason I thought your view was nonsense but I respect your right to make your point be it nonsense or otherwise. Just keep the judgement of what is worthy of a post to yourself or someone is likely to tell you to get over yourself.

Funny this thread has come along just as I've been having problems keeping my cat in, so perhaps can get some advice on it. I've got two cats, one lazy female who stays in the flat or garden but won't stray beyond, one male who likes to roam a bit further but neither seem to be hunters: they've never brought anything in. Still, for their own safety and everyone's peace and quiet, I've always kept them in at night. However, the boy cat is now waking me up earlier and earlier bashing on the cat flap and yowling to be let out. I'm getting less and less sleep!

I've tried playing lots with them before bed to wear them out and giving them a late snack. But doesn't seem to be working. For some of the reasons other people have mentioned, I'd like to continue keeping them in, but only if I can somehow train boy cat to not cause a fuss at 5am. Any tips for training? They are 5-6 years old, I got them from the Celia Hammond a year or so ago so no idea what training they had before. Help! And thanks in advance...

I know it's possible to get a cat flap that works by the cat wearing a collar that will 'trigger' it to open, is it also possible to get one that can be operated on a timer, if so that might be the solution...

... and if it's not cats or foxes, it's dogs. So, you are right, but this thread seems to suggest that cat owners want dogs to be set these boundaries, all whilst refusinig to even contemplate that cats might have their wandering ways checked. 'andy1' being a case in point.
