I just bought a flight from Ryanair, Stanstead to Glasgow, for 2 pence return. Yup, 2p. (Obviously you add taxes and booking fee and it's more like ?29).

I know I have the choice to use the railways, but a comparative check on prices shows that a "saver" return, ie the cheapest ticket availbale now, London to Glasgow Central, is ?102.90.

I really hate to have to fly, but it should not be cheaper to go by plane than by train. Madness!

I ain't got no kids Amanda! Besides, I'm going away in a few weeks, so it's not like I left it till the last minute. I can't think of one sensible reason why an air fare is 2p, while a train fare is over ?100. If you want the super-cheap fares (even then about ?40, still more than the plane) you have to book at least three months in advance, but who on Earth is able to plan that far in advance? I don't even look that far ahead when I go on holiday for heaven's sake!

The private train companies trouser hundreds of millions in subsidies each year, while putting rail fares out of the reach of your average traveller. Grrr. Rant over!

the headlines cost of the air flight makes it an apparant no-brainer

But when I factor in:

trips to and from the airports (and asociated costs compared to 176 to Waterloo)

hanging around airports for hours and the temptation tospend money on crap

the shitty feeling I get when I get off the plain at the other end - esp after taxing around a runway for 30 mins

still got to pay to get to the town centre I've arrived at

The airline also sting you every step of the way - checkin costs money for example

I generally still plump for trains whenever possible

Also buying 2 singles can be a big saving the ?100 + fare comes down to 2x?30 if I go for single journeys (I'm not defending the layrinthing system - just sayin is all)

    • Caught him a few years ago at a bizarre gig in Canterbury and know his London agent.  Sad but he wants a well man.  It was a pleasure to have seen him a few times, always different!  Hadn't realised he had been a local.
    • Stewart Lee, who I have seen numerous times, played a gig 18 months ago in Peckham, turning up late and doing around 12 mins of an expected headliner slot.  He has no social media presence and is uncontactable.  I complained to the ticket agents and promoters to no avail.  Obviously I wouldn't boycott a paper due to this incident. With hard copy print declining more liberal media need support irrespective of how easy it is to pick holes.  The decline of regional and local papers has compounded the issue of so many drawing their information from the right wing/populist press, and unverified reports on social media.
    • Avoid companies that are run by non trades people Seems to be the trend lately. Check them on Companies house first. There are some great family companies or sole traders.
