rod covered "have i told you lately" as well.

Chris Farlowe also had a big hit with Out of Time, originally written and recorded by the Rolling Stones

He also covered

Hey Joe ? The Leaves

The Star Spangled Banner ? Which has apparently been a big hit in America since the 1800s. Although the original tune was taken from an English song about a Greek poet called To Anacreon in Heaven.

Gloria ? Van Morrison

Johnny B. Goode ? Chuck Berry (but who hasn?t)

Stepping Stone ? The Monkeys

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band ? The Beatles

Have I missed any?

Van Morrison wrote "Have I Told You Lately" himself - though Jim Reeves did cover an old C&W song called "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?" long before.

Scary thing is that Van the Man reckoned it's about his relationship with God. Don't think Rod Stewart (or numerous wedding DJ's) ever got that.

I need to get out more.

The Tide is High - Blondie (and later Atomic Mutton). Original was a B-side in the UK for The Paragons (yes, I did have to Wiki it).

Agree re: Tom Waits/Downtown Train. The cover is, em, much more accessible.

Definitive bigger-hit-cover version must be "My Way" by Paul Anka etc - does anyone think of him rather than Frank Sinatra (or maybe Elvis, or, em, Sid Vicious). Though honorable mentions must go to Step On (not originally the Happy Mondays), Don't Leave Me This Way (not originally The Communards).

Do complete reinterpretations count? If so, you have Always on My Mind (PSB version). Think it was probably a bigger hit for Elvis, though.

Not sure if this tune was ever a hit for either artist, but "A Soldiers things" by Tom Waits (brilliant) and murdered by Paul Young (disgraceful). Just a footnote, none of my song/music related postings have been googled, wikipied'd, or gleaned from the net. I either own the tunes and songs I refer to or know about them from collecting music for nearly 40 years. Yes, I know it sounds smug but I do love music and sometimes can't help being a bit of an anorak.

Well they did co-write the song together. I do agree though that Iggy's version is far superior.

    • Hi everyone, we are trying to finslise our decision for enrolling our son for 3+ from September and currently considering Dulwich Prep or Herne Hill. We like both and appreciate there is no right or wrong answer but what we like about HH is great focus on early years and also being coed. However if we can avoid the 7+ stress then prefer to do that. Dulwich Prep is closer but the difference is not significant. we know children are very active and busy in DP and they have great facilities, but unlike HH, we don’t know much about their focus on personal development and emotional intelligence, etc! Also not sure about long-term impact of being in boys only school. Difficult decision for us and we appreciate feedback from parents if you can share please.    thank you
    • Yeah that was their old policy. Their new policy is to force you to have a water meter and if you refuse they put you on a punitively high tariff which effectively forces you to have one. I was doing well with my policy of polite resistance which was to say yes fine I'll have one fitted but then not actually book an appointment or cancel the appointments they made. But then I was persuaded that it would be much cheaper anyway.
    • Lots of lovely lilac shrubs in flower at the moment. Would anyone consider giving me a cutting? It would involve digging out a basal off shoot, roots and all. I'd love one for my new garden but I'm so broke that I have to fill it with plants the slow way!
