Be born well or marry well! Actually if you were a real 'lady' you wouldn't bother to mention it - it only causes resentment!

ive a cousin who got one for something or other, she's a doctor. she never mentions it and I only know because her mum told my mum but in general they havent told anyone, she got it for doing a job she loves and for doing good. She accepted because she couldnt see why not but neither does she boast about it.

I do think celebrity obe's etc cheapen them though. They just hand them out to those who are either still around or because they cant think of anyone else to give one to who is famous. Your average person wont read the paper of the awards list if its just given to ordinary folk so they have to keep them in the public eye by giving them to pointless twats like football personalities etc.

>>When the Beatles got their OBE many possessors of that award returned theirs in disgust<<

The Beatles were awarded MBEs ("Mr Brian Epstein") not OBEs - and I think only a few Disgusted-of-Tunbridge-Wells types returned their medals. They had of course worked wonders for the Balance of Payments and were far more deserving of their gongs than some of Harold Wilson's retirement honours recipients were :))

What do these medals have to do with the Monarchy? Sod all. Its an award given by the State on the behalf of the people, the Queen just hands it over.

Republics hand out medals like Smarties, usually big colourful ones that come with a big sash.

The title of the award is an irrelevant historic oddity.

Just accept it, think of it as an "Other Buggers Efforts" - which they usually are.

Someone (sorry can't be arsed to scroll back and see who) suggested accepting it just so you can return it if the government, the monarchy or any other bugger offends you.

John Lennon returned his MBE in protest at the Vietnam war and Cold Turkey slipping down the charts.

Go on, you know you want to.

Oh and the other is if you do accept it, wear it. Not just on the state occasions and garden parties you'll no doubt be invited to once you're 'in the club' but all the time. When you're shopping, on the piss, attending parent teachers evenings, in one of the many betting shops on the manor, in short all the time. Allow it to become worn and distressed, I'm sure the queen would approve of someone who actually used a present she gave him rather than put it away and never played with it.

Wasteful and not a little ungrateful I'd call that.

Or better still accept it and I'll swap it with you for something of equal value. Though you don't know it, you are in the same cyber romm as one who (that's me by the way) owns a copy of a Fantastic Four paperback signrd by Johnny Rotten. Just think I'll be HonaloochieOBE you'll be in possesion of a fine punk rock artefact and DulwichMum will be able to continue her lobbying for a Dameship unimpeded by the burden of a lesser present (that OBE, it's starting to look a little common, really isn't it?) from the monarchy.

I'd say everyone's a winner, toquote Errol Brown

bless you JC

(and smugly remembers January 16th when I wrote:

"The question raised at the start of the thread was about wether an OBE should be accepted, not about pro or anti-monarchy (happy to join in if it kicks off tho!)

(although a part of me suspects that was the intention of the question. Cynical, moi?)
