JKA Damp Proofing- recommendation

Good morning all,

I wanted to put a recommendation up here for John Relph of JKA Damp-proofing as he has just completed some considerable work on my house.

There was significant rising damp in my kitchen around the external door, wall and window section of the house which for the life of me I could not find the source of. John was able to identify it quickly (the previous owner had raised to floor an inch or so but left a gap exposed to the elements which took in the water), provided a quick quote and was able to fit my job in relatively quickly.

As the work took place more issues of the previous owners botched jobs transpired (unsafe and rusted electrics, no lintel above the window!) but John was able to rectify these issues or got in the right tradesman in to do the job. He would always phone me to explain the issue and a let me know what the cost would be before going ahead with the work. He also worked a Saturday and a Sunday to get my work done which was incredibly useful.

I am really pleased with the work he has done and how thorough he has been with my job and his professional pride/reputation is important to him so I have no qualms in recommending him and getting him back in if required (although I hope I won?t need to!). All his work is Triton insured and guaranteed too which was an important deciding factor for me.

Happy to answer any other questions on John?s work and his contact details are:

    • Thank you, this really made me chuckle. It's like you met my brother as he would be the one taking more than his share. Plus the 'pikey' chutney is a winner. Unusual as in can't be identified??? Sadly I'm not the host otherwise I would definitely do that I regularly shop in the Cheese Block and am a fan. But as people have pointed out, there is no cheese shop that charges less based on bulk, so Aldi unusual cheeses may be what the familam receive! Yay, so I can get discounted mouse nibbled cheese still! Oooo, now I do love a Stinking Bishop. It actually offends my stepmum by it's stinkiness but luckily she is not one of the attendees at this particular gathering.
    • I like the look of SD's Sweet and Sour chicken. It's a really good dish when made freshly and well. I'll need to try it. Sad that Oriental Star and Lucky House by Dulwich Library both closed at a similarish time. They were decent, reliable, "British Chinese" takeaways.
    • William S Spicer was a family-owned firm that initially made horse drawn delivery carts for breweries (especially Fullers Brewery in W London) and horse-drawn trams. With the advent of the internal combustion engine, they successfully made the transition to coachbuilding delivery vehicles London's leading department stores using German engines. WW2 interrupted their business for obvious reasons, and their postwar attempt to become the local assembler and distributor of Bulgarian "Izmama" trucks was not blessed with good fortune. In 1953, the company pivoted to being a full-service garage, leveraging their reputation for honesty and excellence.  In 1972, the Dulwich site was sold to its present owners. William S Spicer III (the grandson of the founder) retired to Lancashire, where he founded a sanctuary for the endangered ineptia beetle, which he had encountered in Bulgaria while travelling for business. In 1978, Spicer was awarded an OBE for conservation, and a newly-discovered  beetle was named after him by the Bulgarian People's National Academy of Sciences - Byturus Spicerius.
    • I'm glad all this talk of cheese has enticed David Peckham back to the forum.
