Haven't seen the film but have heard many fors and againsts

I do know that race as an issue over there is substantially different to the UK. Even if you see a US comic touring the UK a lot of material is about race and it leaves UK audiences non-plussed because we seem to just get on with it and mingle much more than the US

I know some parts of the UK have enclaves but on the whole we are very good at the whole multi-cultural thing

It was the a film liked by people who really don't know how racism works, especially in a cosmopolitan city like LA. The only people who liked this film are the ones who don't encounter racism. The film was really in-you-face with earnest "issues" but it all boils down to a bunch of stereotypes trapped in a duff, sub-Magnolia (and that was another over-rated film) story-telling structure.

The film is self-congratulatory. It's the kind of "quality" product that Hollywood serves up a couple of times per year that the broadsheets go crazy over but are actually generally rubbish.

Of course it's ok, each to their own asset. I just thought it was a watchable enough but mediocre film, so never really understood the hype and plaudits.

Great performance by Dillon, I've said on another thread that his was the only complex character in the film and he rose to the challenge.

Actually some of the people who were there were very excited about it! Most of them seem to have never been to a concert before! If it was possible I would have said that the people there were handpicked to be easily pleased - and we were given our tickets by a friend of a friend from North Devon who couldn't afford to come up for it, and had she would have been overwhelmed by the occasion.

Radiohead - any period - I just don't understand what makes them so special

Mighty Boosch, Fast Show, Little Britain....erm, are they overated or do I simply have no sense of humour!

Hope and Greenwood-ooooh, I'm treading dangerous territory here. Why does sugar and fat have to be so twee? (and expensive)

David Mamet - his plays leave me cold.

But I rather like Russell Brand and as for the film Magnolia - I loved it.

agree about Radiohead too

but the 3 comedy series you mention are quite, quite different from each other - one of them should appeal at least

is fat and sugar expensive? I know good CHOCOLATE is expensive but that is a different matter. And yeah it's kind of twee but even tho' many other shops have got in on the act it was a bit of a trailblazer. And kids seem to love it - if I was a kid I'd love it. Actually I love it anyway... is there somewhere else I can go to get chocolate chilis?

And I agree about the Arctic Monkeys too

uh oh - rant mode on - apologies in advance Steve

Come on Steve you know full well the argument isn't that - you pay ?135 for just 2 channels do you? You don't get the best web news service in the world, you don't get advert free TV, you don't get a world service which, if nothing else provided a lifeline to many a Brtish prisoner held abroad, you don't get superior radio to anything else available

So you don't use any of them - you prefer the channels that Sky offer do you. Entirely up to you. Just be glad your money contributes to what makes Britain special. The day it goes is a day future generations will look back on with sadness

All for feckin football and endless home loan adverts on 60 channels

[on a slightly more reasonable tip]

I would argue that one of the good things about it is that you or I don't have the choice - it's not about consumer freedom. It's about a whole nation doing something together and reaping the benefit

Sometimes we need to be slapped and told "just do it". If we had a choice, then it wouldn't even exist. Enough people would exercise their choice and then it would be gone forever and for everyone...

Slightly hippyish I know..

I would like the option to pay for the BBC as with any other provider supermarket car maker. I dont have the 'feckin football channels Sean, far too rich for my blood. Like Brendan says you cannot tell them to stuff it' if you want Sky, NTL, Telewest it's a legal prerequisite to buy the beeb.

Something else that is vastly overated is staying on topic!

I don't think we're ever going to agree on it Steve - not when one of the things i like is that it isn't just another provider - so we'll draw a veil over this one (lord knows I have seen th elicense fee argument go on for years on other forums)

As for detector vans - I have been visited 4 times for a license, and when the visit and you don't have a license (I was young!) they don't mess about

    • @Sue said: nobody is blaming the child, they are blaming the person who should have been watching him g) do you really think it was acceptable for that person to find the situation funny? This is the point. Adults are meant to teach their children by example. It sounds as though the adult guardian/ father in this case did not react appropriately. Had a truly sincere apology been given,  I suspect the OP would not have posted on here. It is possible the OP snapped in the heat of the moment, but they were possibly startled because they were hit from behind? If we are startled it can be instinctive to initially react with anger. I also agree that it would be highly irresponsible to let any very young child ride or walk or do anything on a busy public street without supervision- most of all to protect the child. If in this case the child was out of the adult's line of sight that is perhaps another indication that the father needs a refresh in appropriate behaviour around a child, as well as his manners.
    • Malumbu,  if none of us were there, does that mean that nobody should post anything on here unless they have witnesses from the EDF? Why would someone post something like this if it  wasn't true? This is not about whether children should or should not be cycling on the pavement. There are specific issues. a) the child was out of sight of the person supposed to be caring for him b) he appears to have been  either not looking where he was going or was out of control of the bike c) if he did see that he was about to hit someone  he apparently did not give them any kind of warning  d)  a person was unexpectedly hit from behind whilst just walking along, which in my view makes him a victim e) does the title of the thread really matter as the issue was described in the first post?  f) nobody is blaming the child, they are blaming the person who should have been watching him g) do you really think it was acceptable for that person to find the situation funny? The OP was not complaining about the 4 year old. They were complaining about an adult's lack of supervision of a 4 year old who was not capable of riding a bike and who hit someone from behind with no warning. Also, apart from reading the OP more carefully, perhaps also choose your words more carefully. Jobless? Lunatic? Charming.
    • I have to say, I too am upset about the passing of DulwichFox. He was a real local character, who unlike me, managed to stick with ED despite all of the nauseous yuppification of the last three decades. R.I.P to foxy    Louisa.
