Re: The Stones Roses, it wasn't just the music it was the scene that evolved from that period along with the Happy Mondays (another overated band IMO) that they are so revered but one half decent first album and a piss poor second and a singer who can't hold a note does not a band make. But, having been very much around the rave scene at the time I can honestly say I had it LARGE! :))

Like the woman said.

I wasn't in the British Isles during the 90s (came back in Jan 00), so there wasn't any overshadowing to be done.

For me, Kim Deal was hyper important to the Pixies, and she came into her own with The Last Splash. Tomboyish not macho. Saw them in the Basque Country in the 90s - nothing like it! (even though the floor almost collapsed)

None of Britpop measured up to that (and I saw everyone from Suede to Stone Roses to Elastica to Oasis to....).

Radiohead, of course, surpasses anything that Britpop ever did. They live alongside Slowdive and Ride (OX4 anyone?) in my collection. Yes, the shoe-gazers have something to be proud of!

I'd agree with Jah, Stone Roses doesn't stand up to close analysis in the same way that Star Wars doesn't, but if it was the whole fabric of right sound, right place, right time, and now it's so interwoven into special memories.

Along with Acid House it quite literally blew my socks off!

YES - ABSOLUTELY - WHAT ATILA SAID

Who are these people - most of them are famous for nothing. At least actors and musicians have done something (albeit sometimes not much); but there are people out there claiming to be celbrities for nothing. This is partly the reason that I don't have a TV; the cult of celebrity is just so invasive; reality TV is everywhere (except my house obviously). I once asked a friend's little girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and she said "famous". I nearly cried.

Coffee

Being young - much happier now I'm older thank you

Going to the gym

Live music in restaurants

Holidays abroad

Heston Blumethal-style ingredients - irony and food do not go together

Am thinking of volunteering for next series of Grumpy Old Women, before anyone asks... You're quite wrong about Pride and Prejudice, though. V amusing, though not quite as funny as Persuasion.

Live music in any location that is not a live music venue.

> Holidays abroad

Package holidays in increasingly bizarre locations.

Holidays where the sole purpose seems to be to travel across the world just to be surrounded by people from your home town. Including overseas hen parties, stag parties etc.

And on that subject: weddings, white weddings, expensive weddings, wedding dresses

I'm with you on soggy rashers of limp pink back-bacon stuff. Especially when it's fried, and ends up poaching in the water that was injected into it to make it look all plump.

But proper streaky bacon grilled until it's nice and crisp... now there's a truly wonderful thing.

    • Ahh, that's too bad. The SLP was always on sale in Sainsbury's and always available in libraries. They did some really detailed local crime reporting and local government reporting that other outlets wouldn't focus on.
    • Miranda Sawyer of the (once) Observer has done a piece on festival on Insta which might be of-interest.  Councils are private companies, imo. They make money for themselves, imo.  I do not think by law that they have to follow anything brought up by a consultation, this is for 'face' only - hence, LTNs and everything else.
    • My understanding is the "free event" is 100% Gala, nothing to do with the council. Obviously Gala will still make money from the food & drink that they are trying to coerce punters into buying on their social media posts. Their costs will be negligible due to already having the infrastructure in place for Gala. So Gala are trying to appear community minded by providing this "free event", but the real goal is to set a precedent for a fourth day's festival - which surely no one could possibly object to?!? - in preparation for applying (again) for two three-day festivals spread over two weekends. It's only another two days, right, and the site & equipment is already there, so why would anyone object?!? More money for the council, much more money for Gala, win-win right? But yet another week of our park taken away from us, too, and another 18,000 people trampling & littering the park, and another week of disturbance for the native birds & wildlife...
    • Meson Don Felipe on The Cut was my go to place for many years. Though it's now many years since I was there. 10-15 minute walk from the Tate. If you go can you tell me what it's like nowadays?
