siousxiesue
Does anyone else have a conflicted view over this? I'm afraid this move will restrict certain people unfairly, lots of people (myself included) prefer to keep an eye on daily coffee spending, not to mention being discriminatory to folk without access to bank accounts. A straw poll today proved it to be an unpopular move and I'm wondering if this was in their original application for the contract. does the council not have a duty to see all members of it's community has access to recreation facilities?Am I overreacting? PeckhamRose
I totally agree with you. This is awful. I never use cards if I can avoid it. I always love using cash. Often, shops like it too. But you're right, many people don't have a choice. (Some of my clients still pay me by cheque!) Having said that, some people can't afford the sort of prices in many such establishments anyway. Certainly won't be going back to this cafe till they re-instate the use of cash. And they shall survive. tiddles
Its probably to do with lessening the likelihood of a break in. Also Paying cash into banks is quite time consuming as more branches close. I Think Tart went cashless because of repeated burglaries Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/238565-cafe-in-peckham-rye-goes-cashless/#findComment-1373621 Share on other sites

Jacqui5254
Yes, got turned away on Tuesday after queuing with a 3 year old. Didn't want to go for a trip to the park with a handbag so just put some cash in my pocket. No drinks for us. ed26
I totally get this from a business point of view. Banks now charge a lot for cash & cheques, and it may be disproportionate to the amount of cash they are banking, if it's a flat or minimum fee rather than a percentage. Also makes sense from a cashing up and security point of view.Personally, I'd prefer a cashless cafe to a ?10 minimum spend (like some places do for cards) and it's nice not to feel guilty for only putting ?2 or so on a card transaction.I'm the complete opposite to Jacqui5254 though - I wouldn't think of leaving the house without my debit card but I'm often without cash, and I rarely go to the cafe unless I'm having lunch with the nipper, so that's a ?20-?30 tab anyway. But overall, I think that cafes like the Peckham Rye and Dulwich Park should be classed as community amenities and should be as accessible as possible to everyone, so I hope they have a good reason for this, rather than it just being a chain-wide decision made at the top. worldwiser
They are in a somewhat exposed position so I have some sympathy with wishing to avoid the logistics of cash management on and off the premises. But the primary reason for avoiding the caf? is the simply outrageous prices. Having to carry that much cash around to settle a bill there is something I'd want to avoid. 1921
I personally do not like it but I fully understand why they have done it, the Green and Brown cafe chain in Crystal Palace have repeatedly been broken into.It is a shame the negative behaviour of others has an impact on us all. fishbiscuits
It does suck a bit... if I'm going for a run I'll often chuck a fiver in my pocket so I can stop somewhere for 5 minutes at the end to relax with a coffee.I always assumed the main reason for going cashless is that they can serve customers more quickly, but yes I guess the logistics of depositing cash and keeping stocked with change has an overhead (and risk) too. micromacromonkey
Better for the business: Bank charges for cash handling are getting higher, employees with fingers in the tills, theft from premises overnight, shorter dwell time at the tills etc.Better for most consumers: why would you carry a selection of bits of metal and paper around to exchange for most likely a different set of bits of metal, when you can carry a small piece of plastic, or even better just use your phone, which you are likely to have with you anyhow? If you are worried about tracking spending (as one person said above) then get your bank's app. My credit card app sends me a notification instantly for every purchase. It's not ideal for people without bank accounts, but frankly those sort of people are unlikely to be paying ?9.75 for a fish finger sandwich. Dulwich Born And Bred
I prefer cashless as I rarely have cash. Most people are paid via the bank so I don?t see the issue with using a card? DulwichFox
The only time I would use the cafe on Peckham Rye is if I'm out exercising / going for a walk and fancied a Tea and a cake. I do not carry credit cards whilst out walking as my tracksuit bottoms do not have deep secure pockets. I seldom carry credit cards at all and NEVER at night. I get cash from the bank during the day and take enough cash with me when I go out at night to cover my needs.. Beer and Curry. Also cashless must limit Children from using the facilities. Zaardvark
Afraid so. Going cashless is the future (i.e. visit Stockholm) and all smartphones have the capability to be used like cards also. If they were burgled/robbed then you have to understand. I am surprised to read the negativity in the comments and "I seldom carry credit cards at all and NEVER at night." is true to form for DulwichFox (i.e is not true and is to provoke). Dulwich Born And Bred
Most people have to use their cards to draw out cash, saves them doing that. DulwichFox, there is debit cards too, not just credit cards and if your pockets aren?t deep enough to carry a small piece of plastic, then you can?t carry cash or your door keys or your phone in your pockets either. kford
It's the way of the world. The Oval is cashless and so are many streetfood stalls and pop-ups, for all the reasons above. I actually prefer it to cash-only places, like Thai Corner Cafe. DulwichFox
I have agreed with Admin not to further comment on aspects of safety in the area here on EDF. I.E. Not to over emphasise the situation. There are MANY places which can be thought of as requiring caution. I use my discretion as to where and when I go to those places. This thread is about the Cafe on Peckham Rye going Cashless. lets stick to the subject.
