I think hundreds of millions is a bit strong.

Just think about the Millions of Coronation Souvenirs being made by Small Children

in appauling conditions in sweat shops in China and the like.

The thousands of miles of Bunting .... The Millions of Flags...

All the Tat that people think will be worth a fortune in the future.

The true price may well be a Child's life...

Yeah, I'll be sure to bear it in mind.....good grief!

I have my feet up and am watching a lot of miserable, sodden wretches standing gazing at a river full of equally miserable, equally drenched bods on boats and listening to the BBC's finest tell me how truly, wonderfully, spectacular it all is...

I am thinking of applyng damp towelettes to the back of my neck to get in the swing of things...

You want to pop over the the Guradian site and see some of the mouth-frothing comments on there. The 'republicanism is not dead' article is a particularly wonderful collection of thoughts from rationally challenged..

Small daughter and I went up to the South Bank, clutching flag designed as part of school Jubilee-related activity.

Looking back, I really can't think what possessed us, except the feeling that daughter shouldn't suffer for parent's scepticism re "historic" event. Staying home with damp towelettes a la maxxi while waving the flag might have been a lot more sensible...

The river bank was jam-packed with people clutching bottles of plonk and Sun-sponsored flags. Security staff everywhere turning people away from vantage points unless they had tickets, invites or the right corporate-sponsored wristband. Politely asked a number of people 'Can my child - not me - get around you to catch a glimpse of the flotilla. She isn't tall enough to block your view.'. Universal answer "No, we've been here for two hours and we are not going to move".

Afterwards, the Festival Hall looked like a refugee camp. The loo queue snaked all the way around the ticket lobby, harrassed bar staff rushing around trying to cope and sodden people sitting exhausted on the floor, anywhere they could find a spot. The river walk itself full of enormous puddles and strewn with trash, the train stations a nightmare of overcrowding and no buses until you got to the Elephant.

Lovely!

I thought long and hard (I lie..5 mins) to decide where in the UK to celebrate Jubilee weekend. Scotland. Spent today in sunshine on River North Esk fly fishing - not a soul for miles, fresh salmon in the river and kingfishers, woodpeckers and an otter. Blue skies and hit 18c here tonight. Just got back to find some rainy barge thing on telly, Gary Barlow and hysterical women draped in damp union jacks. It looked like my worst nightmare.

TBF, if you want sense, then cat owning Guardian readers are probabaly not going to reap a bountiful harvest. Guardian readers are paper tigers.

"We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like 'I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive . . .' And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming, 'Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?'

Ah, another of the minority whose only flair is in their nostrils

Ridiculous is the best description of you

Woodrot - I was on the riverside yesterday, everyone around me was having fun. It was damp but there were many smiles, much laughter, a great atmosphere and a lot of excited and animated conversations between people that had never before met from all walks of life and many different nationalities. The only downcast and saddo's to be seen were the 100 or so anti monarchy demonstrators outside City Hall - most of whom did have the decency to look a little sheepish and embarrassed.

Your reading of popular opinion, the monarchy, its history and the history of the British Empire (as was) is far too binary, those of us capable of a more nuanced look at the world can see both the enormous benefits that came out of the Britsh Empire as well as the many negatives - tho' many of those negatives are only so in the light of today's mores and not, of themselves, absolutely wrong or evil.

One telling, example is the Slave Trade. Yes, the British did take part in the slave trade - refining an existing trade that had been in existence for over a 1,000 years and, until then, dominated by native African tribal chiefs and Middle Eastern traders. However, it was also the British, and their primary instrument of policy, the Royal Navy that led the way in abolishing the trade. Britain was not coerced into giving up the slave trade - the impetus cam from within the establishment - it was not easy and there was much opposition but the right way ultimately prevailed

    • You can always check when they registered on the forum, if you are suspicious. But I recommended Aria, and it certainly wasn't my only post on here, and it was a genuine recommendation. ETA: And he didn't ask me to make it, to the best of my recollection. But even if he had, many local tradespeople ask people to post on here if they are happy with the work that has been done.
    • I am not a patient at this practice, but surely it is more sensible to have an initial  phone discussion, as often the GP wouldn't need to see someone face to face unless they actually needed to physically examine them? This then leaves the available face to face appointments for patients who need them. And if during  the phone call the GP felt you needed examining, then arrangements could be made for a face to face. If you feel your ailment is such that you will definitely need to be physically examined, can you not explain that to the receptionist?
    • Give Labour a chance, they've only been in government for a short time, and they inherited a mess! As regards the notice boards, to the best of my recollection they were originally intended as community notice boards, and certainly not for advertising local businesses (who would decide which businesses  should have the limited space on the boards, anyway?) East Dulwich may have become more gentrified since the boards were first introduced, but that surely doesn't mean they should now be completely  taken over for the benefit of  the "middle classes", to the exclusion of everybody else? As  NewWave says, surely these people have other ways to find out about groups and events of interest to them, which the "non middle classes" may not have access to, and even if they did may not be able to afford them. Several people including myself have complained to councillors about the state of the noticeboards in the past.  I think one of the issues is that they were originally maintained by local volunteers, who may have either moved out of the area or lost interest - or given up in despair when the boards were flypostered and/or vandalised. I completely  agree that the boards should be used for information about not for profit organisations in the area, but if regular maintenance can't be provided and/or they continue to be vandalised, then I think it would be better if they were removed altogether.
