I love the Summer

But I dread getting bitten by Mosquitos

Weirdly up until a about 4 years ago I was fine, a bite came and went in a few days. However, one day I was bitten on the leg by a Horse Fly whilst in Horniman's Garden. Within about an hour my shin and ankle were massive and I could hardly walk

It was quite nasty, but I got over it

Now though what happens is:

If and when I get a Mosquito bite my body over reacts and my leg/arm swells, along with my glands, and to top it all my liver aches somewhat. I'm then prone to getting a skin infection and have had antibiotics each time, bar one. I've even developed Cellulitis twice, which is agony, quite dangerous and puts me out horizontal for a couple of weeks

And all this from a tiny itsy-bitsy Mosquito bite !

Thankfully, through the forum I've discovered the ninja of all products Avon Dry Oil spray, and it's been a life changer. But it's only good for about 98% protection and yesterday I was bitten again. So on we go.

I've wiki-diagnosed myself:-S and thus far i've come up with Skeeter Syndrome, which as syndrome names go is pretty snappy

(I am waiting to see a specialist btw )

Has anyone else developed anything simular ?

(or am I just a freak)

Nette:)::o:-S

Poor Nette, I feel for you as I am the same, though not as bad. I too swear by Avon dry oil body spray and it has worked for everyone i have told about it. I also never got bitten or maby never reacted to bites until 8 years ago. My Doctor told me that some people can devlop certain reactions as they get older. I have devloped a chronic reaction to insect bites which was brought on, in my case by a snake bite which i was lucky to surive. I got amune to over the counter allergy tabs, so now my doc prescribes stronger ones which i can take daily and if i get bit nothing happens. The main reason for infection is scratching, which i know is virtualy impossible not to do.

I started to develop an over-reaction to mosy bites a couple of years ago. Not as bad as you Nette but enough to keep me awake at nights for a week or so plus very inflamed around the bite. Thanks for the tip re Avon Dry Oil.

My current anti mosy bite arsenal includes mosquito net pinned over bedroom window so I can keep it open at night, antihistamine tablets in my handbag at all times so that I can take one immediately when bitten, an ammonia stick and/or one of those electric cell thingies used around the bite to lessen the infernal itching and hydrocortisone cream if it gets very inflamed.

Very good advice. You could also try eumovate (stronger than hydrocortisone and also available without prescription).

Exactly th same happened to me a couple of years back. I was bitten by something on my ankle, not sure whether mosquito or horse fly, and a couple of days later my lower leg swelled up to extra large proportions to the extent I couldn't fit a shoe on and couldn't walk. I went to the doctors and had to take a course of steroids, in addition to anti histamines, to help reduce the inflammation.

Since then, I have reacted fairly badly to all bites - although not to such a degree that the leg has swollen again.

After a bit of googling I stumbled across the Blandford Fly. I wonder if that might have caused some of my bites....

I think that with a major reaction you probably need to go hardcore pharmaceuticals, but for a few hints and tips from the tropics...

Scratching is the worst thing about mozzie bites - it's very much an unconscious habit, so if you can force yourself not to do it, you'll stop doing it and the problems will subside a lot lot sooner.

White tiger balm (the cool one) has been an absolute discovery - it makes the mozzie bite feel cold for about 20 minutes, just long enough to stop yourself fromm scratching.

Anti-perspirant has aluminium in it, and this makes the swelling go down sooner, and so the itching subsides too! Use a roll-on.

    • You can always check when they registered on the forum, if you are suspicious. But I recommended Aria, and it certainly wasn't my only post on here, and it was a genuine recommendation. ETA: And he didn't ask me to make it, to the best of my recollection. But even if he had, many local tradespeople ask people to post on here if they are happy with the work that has been done.
    • I am not a patient at this practice, but surely it is more sensible to have an initial  phone discussion, as often the GP wouldn't need to see someone face to face unless they actually needed to physically examine them? This then leaves the available face to face appointments for patients who need them. And if during  the phone call the GP felt you needed examining, then arrangements could be made for a face to face. If you feel your ailment is such that you will definitely need to be physically examined, can you not explain that to the receptionist?
    • Give Labour a chance, they've only been in government for a short time, and they inherited a mess! As regards the notice boards, to the best of my recollection they were originally intended as community notice boards, and certainly not for advertising local businesses (who would decide which businesses  should have the limited space on the boards, anyway?) East Dulwich may have become more gentrified since the boards were first introduced, but that surely doesn't mean they should now be completely  taken over for the benefit of  the "middle classes", to the exclusion of everybody else? As  NewWave says, surely these people have other ways to find out about groups and events of interest to them, which the "non middle classes" may not have access to, and even if they did may not be able to afford them. Several people including myself have complained to councillors about the state of the noticeboards in the past.  I think one of the issues is that they were originally maintained by local volunteers, who may have either moved out of the area or lost interest - or given up in despair when the boards were flypostered and/or vandalised. I completely  agree that the boards should be used for information about not for profit organisations in the area, but if regular maintenance can't be provided and/or they continue to be vandalised, then I think it would be better if they were removed altogether.
