I thought I would see if any wise family roomers could offer some pearls of wisdom or their personal experiences.

We have lived in ED for about 10 years, had 3 children here, 2 of which are now happy at school, have made lots of friends in the area and generally are very happy here. But coming from the West Country there is a strong part of me that would love to live closer to parents (help with the kids) and closer to the sea / countryside and escape the big smoke. I guess the dilemma we are going through is do we move back down to the West Country (depending on whether we can find jobs of course) or do we stay put. We have pros and cons for both but I thought I would see how many others are having a similar dilemma and what decisions have been made and why!

Thanks!

Hi there! We moved back to our home town 18 months ago & have never stopped missing London! It has been great to be close to family, altho they miss London too now we have left! We are hoping to move back in July! ED has very special qualities, and those deep friendships are hard to replace. On the other hand, moving back to our home town made us cross eyed with boredom, so perhaps that's an important factor. If you move to the beautiful west country, perhaps look for somewhere less familiar so you can still enjoy exploring. Only you know what's best for your family. Good luck!
Oh dear a v. difficult one. You will never know unless you try it for yourselves. There is no right or wrong, just what works for you. Toss a coin thinking heads you move and tails you stay, then judge your gut reaction to what result you get. This has to be your decision. Good luck.

There was a big chat about this a while ago...here...

It's so tricky isn't it. We are about to try out a third option - moving out of ED but still within commuter distance into town for husband's work. Basically we wanted more space but couldn't afford it here (currently live just off lordship lane). We are lucky that my parents live equidistant to new place and here so have always had their support. Also we will be moving just in time for primary applications for next year - so won't be disrupting any school plans. I'll let you know how it goes...!

Thanks all for your replies and the PM's - it's really good to hear other people's experiences. I think you're right it has to be what we think is right for us and at the right time - it's just reaching that decision which is tricky. I think sometimes you need a catalyst to make these things happen!
The key for us is work. We cldnt work where we would ideally live so that is a clear answer. If you can get jobs at home, I'd be tempted. The family support will be great for you and the gps and gc will benefit hugely from each other's respective wisdom and youth. Also you will probably be able to get more house and garden for your money out of london and I would love a bigger place with space to run and play tag. Good luck with the coming months.
