DulwichFox
Rye Lane is a No-Go zone after dark. What do you expect. I would not dream of walking around that area on my own at night. Its why even young kids feel the need to carry knives. It has a thriving night time economy, Random crime can happen anywhere. Try leaving Lordship Lane occasionally. . Its a Shite Hole. the place is derelict. I would really like to know where all these marvellous Bars and Restaurants are ?Are you referring to McDonalds, KFC, of one of the other Fried Chicken places. ? Plenty of those. There is no evidence of these places during the day. Certainly no Bars/Pubs open during the day. Perhaps they are hidden behind all the Graffiti covered shutters. No Indian Restaurant apart from Ganapati ?? If you like sharing a bench with 6 - 8 other peopleNo Chinese , Italian , French. There is a reasonable Turkish that does not sell alcohol BYOI do not see the point of going to Peckham if you live in East Dulwich. Humdinger
Its a shame the pint glass didn't 'slip' out of your hand and shatter on the skull of the little thief. There are lots and lots of these in Peckham. They are badly brought up scum of the earth, and will likely have a life of in and out of prison to look forward to.Saying that, Rye Lane is hardly a 'no go area'. Its a complete dump (although it gets considerably worse the closer you get to Peckham High Street) but hardly unsafe. My biggest gripe is actually trying to walk through it which is very difficult due to incredibly slow moving, large people with nothing better to do than stand around a grim high street blocking the paths and roads. Brulysses
Dulwich Fox, I'm afraid you are talking utter nonsense, Peckham is no worse than any other area in south London, there are loads of decent restaurants on Bellenden Rd, Choumert Rd ranging from tapas to Thai street food, Dim Sum, Italian, good burger joints as well as the Bussey building, Frank's Cafe, Peckham Springs, Brick Brewery closer to and on Rye Lane...I could go on. So do try not to let your snobbery get the best of you, it's unbecoming and unfounded. RobSE15
I have to say that I do take exception at Rye Lane being labelled a s****hole. Surely DulwichFox must realise that a considerable number of forum users live on Rye Lane or in the immediate vicinity? Is that really what this forum is for - slagging off each other's areas? Wouldn't sympathy for the original poster, perhaps with thanks for the warning etc. would be a more normal response? Sazzle30
Peckham has been fine to me at night (I?m a 30 something female who feels perfectly safe heading home alone during the day or v late at night after being out.)Lived there 5 years now after moving from East Dulwich (which my mum refers to as East DULLwich as she found it boring, she loves going down the lane and getting cocktails from Peckham Springs and Bar Story we?ve even staggered home at 11pm alone - she?s from Wiltshire so her first trip to Peckham was an eye opener or her! )Agree the lane doesn?t look great but there are lots of good places to eat. Admittedly you have to look for them. Try the restaurants on the triangle (Nigel road) bus stop - Peddler, Bahn Bahn etc and the White Horse is a great pub which although gentrified still managed to keep its regulars and attract the gentrification crowd. Peckham has changed a lot in the last 5 years I?ve been here. Perhaps start with going for Sunday lunch? I can recommend Forza Win for amazing Italian food which is great on a Sunday.Agree their could be more Indian restaurants (but I?ll go back to ED for them). Although there is Asian Take & Away under the arches at Peckham rye station (right hand side as you come from ED) - they make their own naans and the curry is great and cheap as chips The Motown coffee man in the starvation is a legend and does great coffee Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/235169-attempted-muggging-in-the-unicorn-rye-lane-lounged/#findComment-1364388 Share on other sites
binkylilyput
JohnL good you are ok and still have your phone- shame your pint didn't go over him! Thanks for raising awareness too. It's nice to sit in the window of John Unicorn and enjoy a drink in the sun. Same can be said for Meatliquor on Lordship. I hadn't thought about the potential for belongings to be snatched and of course this is just as likely on Lordship as it is on Rye Lane.I love Peckham and Rye Lane. Has been less pleasant with the recent major road works but otherwise it's a bustling high street that has so far avoided gentrification (not that I'm cussing out Lordship.....there is space for both and diversity is a positive thing).I particularly like Rye Lane on a Sunday when people are out in their national dress for church and there can be singing and gospel music heard. I'll say it again- I welcome diversity.
