I've changed my pattern of behaviour on account of this. My daughter would normally get a bus to the station at about 8pm but I am now driving her there. Thanks you brain dead muggers for increasing the pollution on the streets in more ways than one.

To all those that think that for the sake of political correctness one should leave out gender and/or ethnicity details when reporting or posting a message like this I suggest they look at the situation from a different perspective: if the woman attacked had been your dear mother, grandmother, sister, daughter (or any beloved one, if not even yourself) and a search party was to be briefed, would you be satisfied with the politically correct description that leaves out useful details for identification? Something along the lines "person attacked by three people on the street". Well if under this conditions there is still someone thinking it is racist or unnecessary to specify gender and ethnicity, then I just say I am glad not to be related to such person.

As I (40-something white woman) was cycling through the Champion Hill Estate and turning into Greendale one evening a week ago, a young black guy in a hoody was walking towards me, hood up, hands in pockets. I sneezed violently, nearly falling off my bike in the process, and he turned to me and said, 'Bless you.' I said, 'Thank you.' We both laughed and continued on our way.

I sneeze quite a lot at this time of year and no one else that day said anything. I might as well say that means young black guys in hoodies are doing all the blessing around here.

(PS: this is not intended as a trivilisation of the OP or the subject. I'm really sorry for the woman involved; I'm sure it was a terrifying experience and I do hope she's recovering.)

FFS this again? First of all this is a despicable attack and the perps need to be caught. Fast. Hope the lady is ok. And well done Atticus for acting as he did - we need more like him. No one is saying don't mention the race of a perp. It's just that it needs to be part of a general description if it's going to be useful - otherwise " black youth " could apply to me ( ok, ok a few years ago ... but you take the point) . Atticus I think made an attempt at a fuller description and don't think can be faulted.

Jimmyay on the other hand.... I'd be interested to hear the source of your statistics. Otherwise you could be mistaken for some kind of intellectually lazy, mischief making dick.

Paulsimon - lefties ? Seriously? Is that even a thing these days?

FFS this again? First of all , this is a despicable attack and the thugs who did it need to be caught and punished. For all our sakes. Secondly everyone here hopes the lady is ok . Thirdly , well done Atticus for helping - we need more folk like him, willing to get stuck in. The basic point re racial descriptions is an evidentiary one. I'm probably past the point of being described as a "black youth" but a few years ago it would have applied to me and any number of my friends. I don't think it's "crying racism " to point out that a more detailed description of events like this - no matter the ethnicity of the perp - helps aid detection. Obviously such detailed descriptions might not always be possible - in which case the mention of race will only be of very limited value. Atticus here made a genuine attempt to provide as full a description as he could I think and should not be faulted.

Jimmyay on the other hand.... I'd be interested to know the source of your statistics. Otherwise it would be easy to see how you could be accused of intellectual lazy , dickish and inflammatory posting.

Paulsimon....lefties ? Seriously ? Is that even a thing these days?

I hope she is able to do some photo-fit descriptions. Glad to hear she is recovering physically at least.

    • You can always check when they registered on the forum, if you are suspicious. But I recommended Aria, and it certainly wasn't my only post on here, and it was a genuine recommendation. ETA: And he didn't ask me to make it, to the best of my recollection. But even if he had, many local tradespeople ask people to post on here if they are happy with the work that has been done.
    • I am not a patient at this practice, but surely it is more sensible to have an initial  phone discussion, as often the GP wouldn't need to see someone face to face unless they actually needed to physically examine them? This then leaves the available face to face appointments for patients who need them. And if during  the phone call the GP felt you needed examining, then arrangements could be made for a face to face. If you feel your ailment is such that you will definitely need to be physically examined, can you not explain that to the receptionist?
    • Give Labour a chance, they've only been in government for a short time, and they inherited a mess! As regards the notice boards, to the best of my recollection they were originally intended as community notice boards, and certainly not for advertising local businesses (who would decide which businesses  should have the limited space on the boards, anyway?) East Dulwich may have become more gentrified since the boards were first introduced, but that surely doesn't mean they should now be completely  taken over for the benefit of  the "middle classes", to the exclusion of everybody else? As  NewWave says, surely these people have other ways to find out about groups and events of interest to them, which the "non middle classes" may not have access to, and even if they did may not be able to afford them. Several people including myself have complained to councillors about the state of the noticeboards in the past.  I think one of the issues is that they were originally maintained by local volunteers, who may have either moved out of the area or lost interest - or given up in despair when the boards were flypostered and/or vandalised. I completely  agree that the boards should be used for information about not for profit organisations in the area, but if regular maintenance can't be provided and/or they continue to be vandalised, then I think it would be better if they were removed altogether.
