Louisa you don't half talk shite sometimes. The owners of the Sea Cow go to Billingsgate market to get their fish, then you can choose the fish from the front counter how is that "pretending to be fresh"? And don't forget that if the Sea Cow did do pies and sausages then they would be competing directly with Emilys and Semas, who may lose customers, then maybe have to close, then you could complain that the pesky middle classes have killed/destroyed/wiped them out etc etc. Be careful what you wish for.

Well, I suppose if you don't have high expectations in the first place then you won't be disappointed.

If it works for you - go for it.

I'll be getting mine from Ollie's in the meantime and hoping the Sea Cow gets back on track soon.

As I have pointed out on previous threads about this place, the fish is a standard across the board in UK fish and chip shops, I should know I come from a family of fishmongers. The fish here is no more fresh than any other in south London, and yes it no doubt has undergone the frozen treatment. It is also not just a matter of the freshness of the fish, but also how the fish is cooked and left to dry out and th quality of the batter. This place lacks all of the above.

What the hell are you going on about Mark? Competition is exactly what businesses thrive on, how on earth would it force athe other to closes, surely it would force them to up their game, as Seacow no doubt has to do to survive in its present woeful state. Good grief.

And you claim I talk shite? LOL..

I do have high standards, and lets face it we're tlaking about a bloody chippy here *bob* not some al a carte menu in some fancypants restaurant. Fish and chips isnt that bloody difficult to get right is it? and this place seems to struggle at it, even though its charging through the nose lol

As you come from a family of fishmongers, what is your take on cod stocks? Is all of the available evidence which suggests that cod fishing has to be scaled back or else face collapse, simply wrong?

If it is, what do you base it on?

If it is correct, then what alternative to "scaling back a national dish" is there/

Well Sean i've already suggested putting more options on the menu like pies sausages and other deep fried delights, I am well aware of the cod stocks situation but surely thats an issue for the government and EU. I would personally be happy to see roe on the menu, is that included at this place?

You'd think it wouldn't be. And I don't deny that Emily's and Sema's turn-out a perfectly mediocre bag of fish and chips. But the fact that I'm happy to travel to a neighbouring postcode instead implys (to me, anyway) that there's more to food than RIGHT or WRONG, even if it is just the humble fish and chip supper.

But then I suppose 'right' for you probably just means it's no more than a fiver and there's steam rising from the plate.

Right for me is that I can sleep at night knowing i've not broke the bank on a crappy take-away which should be perfect anyway. It's always been a cheap and cheerful treat that you shouldnt have to travel out of your way to get hold of. I've been to Ollie's before and to be honest I was not overly impressed with the fish, so have never gone back. Clearly you have had a more positive culinary adventure at this establishment *bob*.

Louisa.

*barely* on topic Mark ;-)

Louisa

more options on the menu are fine and dandy but what you actually did at the top of this page is express incredulity at the mere suggestion that cod be scaled back

Why is cod stock an issue just for government or EU - don't the people who put the demand in "supply and demand" ie the customers have a lot to do with it?

As for what the sea cow does and doesn't sell, have a look at the menu

http://www.theseacow.co.uk/

- with about 10 fish on the menu as well as mussels etc I would suggest that rather than stick saveloys and pukka pies on there, it is great to have somewhere that spec-ialises on something. If you got to Emily's (or similar) and want fish you just don't get that kind of choice do you?

So there it is - we have the option to go either or - I don't see what the problem is

Didn't somebody mention further up the thread that a takeaway fish supper cost ?4. Seems to be comparable (f not cheaper) to most other chippies and not ridiculously expensive as some are suggesting.

If you want to sit in and have a different piece of fish then expect to pay a bit more.

Lousia - change the record, you are talking out of your behind as usual.

Guys at Seacow, offer something a little more affordable

Judging by how popular it was before standards dropped, I don't think the price has anything to do with it. Why do you think everything should be priced according to your income/purchasing power? The chippy the Seacow replaced was of the "traditional sort", and was absolutely dire, and only about a quid cheaper on takeaway cod and chips, not the kind of business to get all teary-eyed about, battered sausages or no battered sausages.....

Asset how about you get into the real world rather than changing topic to put me down - you can run but you cant hide from the facts my dear :)

BTW *bob* I went private to get the Iceland's snack removed from my famous region, and it was so much better than kings.

Louisa.

The facts are this place isnt special, it's a normal chippie take-away trying to be different by buying 'fresh' and charging a wee bit more at the counter and offering a snobbed up menu to entice in those who see standard chippies as being beneath them.

Louisa.

The facts, as I see them, are quite straightforward, your honour.

FACT A

Some years back, the brains (what would become) The Sea Cow noticed that:

a) Most chip shops in London dish-out food of a poor standard.

b) Some people would be prepared to pay a little more for nicer fish and chips, given the opportunity.

FACT B

The food at The Sea Cow has gone downhill of late. People complained, because people aren't stoopid - not even the wishy-washy octagonal-rimmed-specs media-types in SE22.

FACT C

The owners of The Sea Cow have acknowledged the complaints and will be getting back on track.

I think that's about it, isn't it?

I rest my case.

FACT D

Fortunately (for the other grubby chippies which are knocking around), there are still plenty of people who still can't tell the difference between a nice piece of fish, fried to perfection and a greasy bit of batter with a soggy bit of something in the middle. Or if they can they're too tightarsed to extra for it.

So everyone's happy.

Sorry to stray back on topic, had take away on Friday, including Coley, and it was excellent.

I certainly got the impression that the guys were making an effort and after recent disappointments, I'm happy/hopeful to see that the usual good service has resumed.

(FWIW I have tried Emilys and though the owner is a lovely chap, the cod and chips isn't as good as the Sea Cow, when on song. I guess this makes me a bad person?)

Well done to the boys and good luck to them.

I note how, following Louisa's entertaining rants about fish and chips, there now seems to be a veritable stampede of customers to Sea Cow from here. And although I am sure the establishment fully deserves to prosper I would nevertheless like to extend my congratulations to their marketing department for thinking up the excellent wheeze of getting Louisa to stir up all this custom in her inimitable fashion. Devilish sly, if you ask me. :))
