What a ridiculous comment to make! What if you bought your property before the area become the "desirable" shopping area it is now? Does this mean you have to put up with the continuous pressures such development and "progress" always will bring? Not all development is positive - again I am not referring to M&S moving in or not but the development plans for the site.

Unless you live in the immediate area where the delevopment will affect you you cant possibly understand the impact expected and cannot comment.

Why on earth would some of you so called dulwich dwellers want m and s here instead of icelands. Is it perhaps that you can't be seen in a lower price supermarket that caters for lots of people who can't afford m and s prices.

Everyone needs to shop and dulwich needs shops that cater for all it's residents no matter their income!!!!

This is my opinion and respect everyone's on here and I hope that everyone is grown up with their potential response :)

I actually enjoy going elsewhere to shop...

I do not understand people wanting everything under their noses..

Like people who travel to Mexico or Africa only to stay in some camp where you never need to leave

because all your meals and drinks are available in one of ten different bars and restaurant on site.

Or go to holiday camps in the UK where you can live in bubble so you don't get wet.

Then go on the Big Rapids Ride where you get soaked anyway...

Why don't we just cover E.D in a big Geodesic Dome where we can have our own micro climate...

For Fox Sake

That's the problem, funkychick - Dulwich is not at present catering for those of its residents who would like to shop at M & S and/or Waitrose!

I have not seen the planning application, but James Barber did seem to indicate in his post on this thread that the application was on the basis that the property would be let to M & S. If it is now Iceland who will be getting the new lease, how does this affect the planning issue?

James Barber also, I think, indicated that, were Waitrose to acquire the lease, they would not want to develop the property at all, but just take it as is - would not this be the best solution, assuming they wanted the lease?

I think I am correct in saying that the brand of the shop will have little if any bearing on the planning application- it is the fine detail of the application and what each proposer brings to the table in terms of the building and issues of parking that are of any significance. It is whether the shop wants to expand the existing building imprint, what they actually want to do with the structure of the building that will have any bearing on planning decisions.

And you had to edit that Penguin because of?

Both Iceland and M&S do not cater for my tastes but I do recognise that people should not be economically excluded from their local high street.

I know this post has good intentions, as well as all the others who support Iceland as a cheaper shop for those with lower incomes, but I'm beginning to think that I must be the only person who actually uses Iceland and also watches their pennies.

I use Iceland for milk, yoghurt, sometimes cheese, sometimes bags of potatoes, but these are loss leaders designed to get you into the shop. Once I've bought these I walk out so that I don't get fleeced.

I've always found the co-op cheaper for everything else. Of course you have to be careful - never buy loo rolls in the Co-op unless on 'special' and get the coconut milk from the 'speciality' section not near the pasta. Dried pulses/rice are often better in SMBS (just keep your head down and avoid everything else in there!).

I guess if you don't read the price labels then Iceland may seem cheaper as there isn't anything really expensive to fall into your basket by mistake but, if you do shop with care, there is very little in Iceland that is really a bargain and an awful lot that is really pricey.

If Iceland goes I shall miss the cheap milk and I'll have to walk up to Sainsbury's for yoghurt at the same price but it won't be the end of the world.

If anyone has any interest, beyond their 'preferred' brand, in the detail of the application and its potential impact on our community please see this link http://planningonline.southwark.gov.uk/DocsOnline/Documents/230437_1.pdf

These are the detailed objections of a local resident and RIBA architect. In particular, note a series of photographs from p.6 on which show the impact of delivery lorries and how badly matched they are for a residential street.

The author of this detailed objection also notes that a very similar application was turned down by planning a few years ago, arguably setting a precedent.

So if some people are concerned about affordability......

.... and as the economy gets worse....

.... and more people struggle to make ends meet....

....Maybe we should be concidering a Lidl Store.

Lets make any new Venture Future Proof...

....and those with a bit more cash will still be able to

treat themselves in one of the more afluent outlets from time to time.

Just to keep us lesser mortals well and truely in our place.
