M&S is proposing four deliveries between 6am to 7am every day of the year with increased deliveries over the busy holiday periods.

Iceland have their deliveries after 8am so not to disturb their neighbour's sleep.

As for your question Ted, a furniture shop, as an example, could have their deliveries after 9am or later.

What about the general economic uplift M&S would Bring. With the Jobs they are creating directly they will probably benefit workers in other shops by increasing footfall. So even if the 'poor' don't shop at M&S they will benefit from the jobs created.

There will also be cleaning jobs, maintenance work etc etc. I really cant see how M&S will damage anything.

They said the same thing about Sainsbury's on Dog Kennel Hill and Yes butchers and greengrocers closed but it hardly killed off LLane,

2. To have a deleterious effect on; ruin. See Synonyms at blast.

v.intr.

To suffer blight.

Iceland is a very profitable company where sales were up by 15% compared to 2.5% by M&S food. Furthermore, Iceland was bought by their management. Given its profitability and cash reserves of ?150m they're well placed for expansion and acquisitions.

This isn't about Iceland as an expanding company, this is about whether Iceland sees its Lordship Lane site as a good continuing investment. See my earlier posts, but every site is examined to see whether it's optimal for the company leasing it.

Of course, it is possible that the site owner, together with M&S, is flying a development kite, and that Iceland is keeping its powder dry, hoping the plan will be turned down and Iceland will be left as the only game in town (and with bargaining power) and that's what the 'keep Iceland' brigade must be hoping as well.

But is is also very possible that Iceland considers other sites will give it a better long-term return and isn't interested in renewing the lease. My guess is that it will have been given the first option so to do, if only because continuity is better for the landlord than a gap in rental income, unless they can get a new leaseholder to co-fund development.

Hi UDP

"Or is it a case that you don't give a care to people's blighted lives as long as you can get your M&S goodies locally?"

Nothing really to do with that - I get mine at London Bridge when in the mood but normally shop around Forest Hill road. I don?t particularly rate M and S as a food retailer. Regarding the blight, I would prefer to consider the quiet views of the majority over the minor view of those whose lives really aren?t going to be affected that much by a change in Supermarket.

However it?s more to do with the fact that you are trying to turn your personal agenda about parking into ?a fight to save lordship lane?. It seems you don?t even shop on the lane that much anyway?

?M&S represents naffness and isn't a draw for customers who have discerning taste. They, like myself, will travel down to Brixton Village where you can get the full works of independent retailers and more importantly, surrounded by cool minded people.?

?I like all things cool so I'll be avoiding M&S on Lordship Lane and spending more time in Brixton and Spitalfield as their retail environment tends to cater more to my exquisite tastes.?

Maybe we and the lane are not cool enough for you,

And then you mention clone towns. How will M and S (a chain store) replacing Iceland (another chain store) make Lordship lane a clone town?

Lordship lane is already a clone town / street ? the majority of estate agents / supermarket / banks / pubs are chains. The joy of the lane is the independent shops which are in the majority maintained by the increasing affluence of East Dulwich and in most cases would welcome the M & S as it would bring in more footfall and trade. In fact the nearest non clone town is Rye Lane where the majority of stores (at least towards the rye end) are independent clothes shops and butchers. This is the area that you think the M and S should move to and improve its mix of shops?

?An M&S in Peckham would also help its own diversity of shops.?

Finally you don?t seem to know what you want to replace the Iceland or improve the lane.

?Lordship Lane could perhaps do with a gift shop chain as to up the competition. I do find stock in the local gift shops rather uninspiring to say the least?

?I rather see an independent retailer take over the site where it's more likely that the neighbours won't be disturbed by articulated Lorries at a very anti-social time and add further diversity of offerings to the shopper?

Poor attempt to turn a personal parking agenda into a campaign to prevent the "gentrification of Lordship Lane"

in answer to those who castigated me for saying east dulwich is a village, I refer you to local histories which state quite clearly that east dulwich is the largest of the villages that constitute dulwich. but does it really matter if east dulwich is a village, a small town or a middle class enclave or a haven for m&s groupies or waitrose wannabees or what the hell else? what I know is that it is a great place to live and run a shop... although I might be happier if undisputedtruth took her custom elsewhere.

    • For some strange reason, hubby likes to spend 'big' on family cards birthday and Christmas. I think it may have stemmed from his mother- she equated money with status and was a bit of a snob!  She was also quite eccentric - we asked for a suitcase one year and got a set of 4. One year she gave hubby the equivalent of a hearing aid - it was a device to hear bird song. Nobody we know send expensive cards. We have a twice yearly set of cards from the Foot and Mouth Painting Artists and have done for the last 30 plus years. I think they are around £12 for set of 10  - cannot remember what we paid this winter but they are fantastic value and beautiful paintings.  One of the best places around to buy cards is the Fair Trade Centre at Christ Church Barry Road. Fantastic selection with a starting price of £1.30.
    • I had to renew my licence - took photocopy of my current licence and also my renewal application and posted everything off. Within 10 days received my new licence. My old licence was due to run out in January so I submitted the renewal early December.
    • I cannot remember who ran/organised the original ED LETS. They had meetings at the ED Community Centre every so often. I think there were about 20 - 25 people involved.
    • That looks consistent with what I saw when I checked a few weeks ago, after someone raised a fresh thread asking about the progress.  I was about to post here asking if anyone could help with what seemed a bit of  a  mystery.  The planning register didn't show the application as decided.  I couldn't find any minutes of the committee meeting that James reported on last year, or any mention in any other minutes of the application.  The meeting was itself  flagged in the meetings schedule as MOVED (presumably to another date).   Incidentally, I remember one of the atttached planning documents being a report on the financial prospects then pertaining.  As far as I understood and remember it seemed to show the construction for sale of the buildings a ? poor prospect for the investment.  I'm no expert though.
