No one on here has said yet what they like about M&S food, no specifics anyway, and why it is so great that they need to have one here.

UDT- cool factor in their clothes - does that apply to the undergarments as well?? And, do tell us where you buy your clothes.....

I think most people in this country still buy their 'pants' don't they?

This will not affect me directly, but those who live locally should make their voices heard especially regarding the Size and hours of operation of delivery vechicles. You don't need to be against the idea of the change to be concerned about a possible (emphasis possible) negative impact, -personally I would much prefer a M&S to an Iceland!

The planning stage is your chance to get clauses added to the planning permission that mean there are not noisy deliveries at 4am for eg. It is normal practice to do this, but difficult to do anything after the fact. I live over the back from another supermarket loading bay, and as there were no restrictions put on their planning permission there is almost nothing we can do about it now.

That's a fair complaint (unlike some of the previous ones). I don't like M&S clothes or food either but clearly there is a market for it here. Besides the very occasional ready lunch I never buy anything in there. I don't like Iceland either but its not up to me, its up to how people locally would like to spend their money and Iceland / M&S / Waitrose understand their consumers and where they should continue / begin to operate.

Nearly an example of Godwin's Law, but not quite.

That's a fair point. I'll give you my answer. I'm after somewhere within walking distance of my front door, that does tasty, fresh convenience food. Not just ready meals or dine for ?10 type meals, but also little luxury for when I'm feeling lazy, e.g. some dauphinoise potatoes to sick straight in the oven to go with a roast. It's not the sort of place I'd do a big shop, or get many staples. It'd be nice to have something more at the luxury end for this, i.e. an M&S or a Waitrose. The Co-op could offer some of these things, but I've found the one on the Lane poorly stocked and a bit of shambles, so I tend to give it a wide berth these days. Some competition would do it some good.

I can see that, but why not buy stuff like that on a monthly basis or so and stick in the freezer.

I have no idea what your business is, which you say is firmly established in the 'village' that doesn't exist.

Wterstones? Why? so you can get 3 books for the twice of 3? Better to go on to Amazon to save money. Laithwaites Wine? Why? There are already 2 good wine stores here, plus supermarkets which also stock wine.

I personally prefer to eat things fresh on the day, or thereabouts. I'm not a big freezer user....and being a bloke that sounds like far too much forward planning anyway. Where's the spontaneity! :) I never know when I'm going to be in or out, so I tend to shop a few times in the week.

AlexC,

In North Dulwich, near Cafe Rouge, there is a shop called Cook which has 'special' things like that. It's all frozen so you have to go home right away and stick in freezer. Might be worth a look if you are in the area. There is also a nice little bakery there.

Or maybe you cold learn to cook and do batchh cooking and freeze......

Gidget - I've been to Cook. It does some nice stuff. It's not walking distance from my front door, so I don't tend to go there very often - and as I said, I don't massively like living off my freezer. And thanks for the patronising comment about cooking. I'm a pretty decent cook thanks, and I very much enjoy cooking when I can. If I was on more of a budget, or a had a family to feed, maybe I'd do more batch cooking....but I'm not, and I don't.

I'm confused as to why you want people to justify why they want a shop like M&S on the Lane? I just do - I'd use it. Maybe you wouldn't. Maybe you prefer to do things differently. Whatever floats your boat.

AlexC,

ED has done fine without an M&S here so far. They are at motorway service stations so hardly exclusive. I am curious as to why some people are so desperate to have one here. That is all. For the record, in the past, when living/working near one I have shopped there and found myself being really disappointed by most of the food.

Even if one comes here it won't have a full range of everything you might want, like the ones in Oxford Street.

I'm sure ED has done fine without an M&S or a Waitrose, I personally think it would be better with one. This isn't about making the area more "exclusive". It's just about serving the clear demand in the area for this sort of shop. Sounds like it's not for you - fair enough. I know it'll be a relatively small format shop, but I think it will do a job. I've peronsally not been disappointed when I've shopped there in the past, so I know it's something I would use. That's that really. Horses for courses and all that..

I think a Waitrose would do better. But losing market share to Aldi etc is reflecting what's happening to the country's finances as a whole. While we as a country are getting poorer, East Dulwich's demographics are getting increasingly richer. Therefore, you'd expect a Waitrose or M&S to buck the trend here. I predict it will be packed. There are a lot of young single renters who work in the city who are desperate for this kind of convenience food living here now. ED isn't just young families anymore!

About 45 minutes ago I looked at Iceland's car park and it was less than half full, so it seems to be underused.

Someone will no doubt now say that very few people who shop at Iceland own cars while most M&S shoppers drive enormous 4x4s (an exaggeration I know).

I suspect that may of the young single renters are not able to cook and so do not understand food quality. Thus they become prime marketing victims.

M&S customer = Marketing victim ;-)

There are plenty of families in ED, LondonMix. Obviously you have not visited the 'Family room' discussions yet on this forum.

I'm so excited, I can hardly sleep! You know that bit when Morgan Freeman's on the bus, going to meet Andy? - well, it's like that. Only he's eating a packet of Cheese Tasters.

The way I see it, if we can put a man on the moon, then East Dulwich can have an M&S.

And I don't know about you, but I'm gonna mosey on down there are soon as it opens and buy as many packets of cheese tasters as I can carry. And I'm going to eat them until my face turns bright orange.

So if they work in the city why not go to the numerous M&S stores there and at train stations?

Crouch End shopping area is a bigger area than East Dulwich. East Finchley fought plans to have a Waitrose located there and were successful.
