I wish that people who want to have a go at the political positions of particular Councillors would start their own "knocking" thread rather than using this M&S thread. I am interested in seeing people's views on the M&S issue and don't want to keep reading knockabout political point scoring on this subject.

Ever wondered why M&S food costs so much? It is to help pay for their advertising budget and bonuses. It has nothing to do with quality.

Anyone who has ever tasted Iceland and M & S food knows this to be untrue. Plus I reckon Stacey Soloman doesn't come cheap.

Stacey Soloman / Kerry Katona. Both a darn sight cheaper than Twiggy, Danni Minogue et al - not to mention all those oh-so famous annoying, "This is no ordinary ****** this is M&S *******" (packet food) voice-overs.

Nicely taken out of context.

Bricklayers arms - occupied lots of land next to a secondary school which has no playing field there. So they bus down to their playing fields in ED. most of our local primary schools have no playing fields. Removing the daft flyover could result in said adjacent school having playing field there and our primary schools having local playing fields. The land in all cases is publicly owned by the council/schools and would involve swapping. The flyover costs considerable amounts for TfL to maintain - ?1M this year alone.

Burgess Park. A neighbouring business that juts into the park burnt down. Buying our the scrap yard would turn a grotty entrance into something better. The price to do this would be significantly lower at this time. My interest is obtaining best value and also my great aunts home and business was flattened as part of the Abercrombie plan to create this park. I also see no reason why residents in the centre of Southwark can't one day have a park they're as proud of as we are of Peckham and Dulwich parks.

Hopefully we can all get back to Lordship Lane.

Fantastic idea having an M&S in Lordship Lane. It will help anchor the high street and bolster other businesses. As well as giving us locals more choice. I'm over the moon about these proposals!

What utter nonsense! 'Anchor the High Street' - eh??

Go to Bromley - they have a massive M&S in very big 'anchored' high street.

Are you referring to me jimmyay? I'm neither a moaner, nor an inverted snob. I have no problem with people having money - what I do have a problem with is people applauding the arrival of a 'High Street' shop replacing another high street shop which sells, basically, convenience food. That's what we already have. We also have lots of other great retailers which offer good bread, meat and veg. If it's high street you want, go to Bromley! Personally, I prefer the feel of a neighbourhood full of the 'butcher, baker, candle-stick maker' type shops. Individuality.

I have been here all my life, and I totally understand the need for retailers to reflect the changing demographic but M&S doth not a community make. Once Starbucks/Nerro moved in it all went downhill. (Star bucks=universal cash. And SHITE coffee)

Sadly, you're mistaken, basher. Your taste buds are influenced by advertising. M&S spend ?160m on their advertising. Plus ?80m on staff bonuses. Once you factor in the fancy packaging you then realise that M&S buy their food cheap and sell them at high prices to the muppets. It seems Economics isn't your best subject, basher. Just as bad as your taste buds.

Well...........Im disabled moved Dulwich 4 years ago always use iceland for my top up esentials no car to go peckham or brixton.

Id be happy with a Aldi or Lidl i miss not having them near me since had move.

Ms no good people like myself.

neighbours in my area all use iceland for kiddies milk etc.

loss of car park not good idea.

building isnt eyesore.....

whats an eyesore is emtpy property on dulwich grove with metal eviction boarding.........in a sense that could be asomones home....

co op isnt so bad....do at least do specials quite often......

Agreed. We'll be replacing one shop which I never, ever use. With one which I will probably use occasionally. And a scruffy building will be getting a bit of a facelift into the bargain. So from my personal perspective, it's good news.

One chain replacing another does not mean the end of LL as we know it. In fact, I suspect that the main losers will be Sainsburys Local and Co-op.

I'm all for it - it replaces a shop I've never set foot in, with one I would. I'd prefer a Waitrose, but an M&S would be fine too. I'm just after somewhere that does some good quality convenience food, which has a decent range. I think it would compliment the Lane nicely.

Sadly, Gidget and Maxxi, you cant stand in the way of progress! I am now firmly established as a Village (and East Dulwich is a Village in my mind) business and can only feel positive about the removal of a downmarket corporate, such is Iceland, to be replaced by an upmarket establishment like M nd S. If we were losing one of the more local independents then I may look at it differently. Having studied the businesses in LL I can see only a few places that would improve from a more upmarket corporate. Costcutter, Iceland, Co-Op, to be replaced by M&S Food, Laithwaites Wine and Waterstones. Subtle changes that would make a huge difference to the foot fall in the Village. My business? You all know it!!

Exactly! People are conveniently forgetting that Iceland is a chain store... The local independents don't compete with M&S's convenience offerings so all those proclaiming the end of the our quaint highstreet are talking nonesense. The only thing about the high street that's changing is it is more gentrified. And like someone else said, people who don't like it are inverted snobs-- simple. It's unfortunate for those who feel displaced by this but it only reflects the changing reality of the area. Saying the more affluent residents in ED should go to Bromely's M&S rather than the decreasing percentage of less well off residents popping over to Peckham's Iceland is rediculous.

Sorry Alan, didn't realise I wasn't allowed to have an opinion. I've not set foot in this Iceland branch, I have set foot in another branch in the past. Many years ago. It's not the sort of place I would personally choose to shop in - I'd rather have an M&S or a Waitrose. That's my personal opinion, but sorry. I forgot I wasn't allowed to have one. Numpty...

I don't like M&S food because they do not meet my high standards. The term 'nverted snob' does not apply to me.

I also feel embarrassed to wear their clothes due to lack of the 'cool factor'.

Quite simple really, those who shop inside M&S do not understand quality or style.
