It's the ex-Kerry Katona factor that coloured Iceland's reputation. Then they had Jason Donovan and a few slebs recreating a party. I admit I never went in to Iceland until about 12 years ago when I accompanied a friend. Then when I moved closer to one I kept wandering in and discovered some very reasonable purchases. I am very picky about what I buy though. In an ideal world there would be room for everyone.

I don't know the figures - someone here probably does.


But - let's take TV - forget about whether the adverts are posh-looking or not, the real money goes on buying the advertising slots. And Iceland is consistently one of the most 'remembered' brands at key sales time like Crimbo etc. Which means they spend a lot of money on getting a lot of people to see their adverts a lot of times.


M&S too, of course.


Indeed, both work very hard at attracting their target customer base: people who can't be arsed to cook properly, the only difference between the two being that one has more cash to spend than the other.

Sorry, not interested in your guesses or reckons. Where are your facts?

While we're waiting for Bob to come back Undisputed truth, why don't you give us the facts about the following statement - not your guesses or reckons:


'I have more respect for Iceland shoppers than M&S as they're not influenced by huge advertising budgets.'


Because I reckon, and indeed guess, that you have reckoned or guessed that Iceland shoppers are not influenced by huge advertising budgets - not least because you hardly ever watch TV so were unaware of the fact that Iceland pays for massive advertising campaigns on prime time TV with well known faces.


But maybe you've done extensive research into Iceland shoppers, and know for a fact they are not influenced by those adverts you've never heard of. Actually, that must be the case - because if it wasn't you'd hardly attack others for not providing solid facts would you?

I've already given the facts. What part of the M&S ?160m advertising budget you don't understand, NS?


The profits for Iceland was ?155.5m according to the Guardian.


Now it's highly unlikely Iceland matches the level of M&S advertising.

Creating more housing is a good thing. It is not the case that more housing of necessity increases pressure on parking, and to be honest, if parking is that bad, cycle, walk and ask zip car if there is any chance of a car club car being put in. The vast majority of residents of central London do not need a car.

Well of course. You are slightly cherry picking on the points though. I think, in this very specific instance, there is a fairly strong case to be made that all considered there will be an increase in parking. There is little point looking at just one aspect of the application (in your case residential units) the thing has to be considered in its entirety.

Does anyone need and rely on Iceland and their cheap prices? The answer is YES.


Losing Iceland would be a real blow for those on lower incomes, and all so people could buy posh ready meals.

    • Tommy has been servicing our boiler for a number of years now and has also carried out repairs for us.  His service is brilliant; he’s reliable, really knowledgeable and a lovely guy.  Very highly recommended!
    • I have been using Andy for many years for decorating and general handyman duties. He always does a great job, is very friendly and his prices are competitive. Highly recommend.
    • Money has to be raised in order to slow the almost terminal decline of public services bought on through years of neglect under the last government. There is no way to raise taxes that does not have some negative impacts / trade offs. But if we want public services and infrastructure that work then raise taxes we must.  Personally I'm glad that she is has gone some way to narrowing the inheritance loop hole which was being used by rich individuals (who are not farmers) to avoid tax. She's slightly rebalanced the burden away from the young, putting it more on wealthier pensioners (who let's face it, have been disproportionately protected for many, many years). And the NICs increase, whilst undoubtedly inflationary, won't be directly passed on (some will, some will likely be absorbed by companies); it's better than raising it on employees, which would have done more to depress growth. Overall, I think she's sailed a prudent course through very choppy waters. The electorate needs to get serious... you can't have European style services and US levels of tax. Borrowing for tax cuts, Truss style, it is is not. Of course the elephant in the room (growing ever larger now Trump is in office and threatening tariffs) is our relationship with the EU. If we want better growth, we need a closer relationship with our nearest and largest trading block. We will at some point have to review tax on transport more radically (as we see greater up take of electric vehicles). The most economically rational system would be one of dynamic road pricing. But politically, very difficult to do
    • Labour was right not to increase fuel duty - it's not just motorists it affects, but goods transport. Fuel goes up, inflation goes up. Inflation will go up now anyway, and growth will stagnate, because businesses will pass the employee NIC hikes onto customers.  I think farms should be exempt from the 20% IHT. I don't know any rich famers, only ones who work their fingers to the bone. But it's in their blood and taking that, often multi-generation, legacy out of the family is heart-breaking. Many work to such low yields, and yet they'll often still bring a lamb to the vet, even if the fees are more than the lamb's life (or death) is worth. Food security should be made a top priority in this country. And, even tho the tax is only for farms over £1m, that's probably not much when you add it all up. I think every incentive should be given to young people who want to take up the mantle.
