Because I've had the email addresses for a long time and it would be a pain to change them, it's free to use and I'm used to the interface.

I don't use it as my ISP or my browser.

Any other questions?

ETA: I usually have no trouble with it at all :)

ETA: And I think hotmail and gmail addresses are naff, sorry - I have them but never use them :)) Each to their own :))

The fact that it Free is the main reason it is oversubscribed and subject to Network Congestion.

This is fine if the content of your mails is not important.

Also sending pictures with AOL may be very slow or impossible at certain times.

I also know that the people who are using AOL are doing it because they haven't actually done any research about the alternatives. So while I don't know anything about the price of using AOL versus the alternatives, I strongly suspect that they don't either, which suggests that AOL is probably using this ignorance to get away with charging more than the alternatives.

The reason to not use AOL to deliver your mail is that they have an official corporate policy of not caring whether your mail is delivered or not.

If the Sevice ?? thats a good one, is Free, then no one has cause to complain.

If it is causing grief it may be time to move forward 10-15 years and ditch AOL.

If you presently have Internet service through MSN (Microsoft Network) or AOL (America Online), you will be able to keep your email address. You will have to access it through their website and cannot use a third-party email program to access it. You will also need to connect using your new Internet service provider.

Keep your e-mail address

Fox

Sorry Fox, I don't get your point.

Why are you quoting something which says that people aren't researching relative costs, when I've already said that AOL is free?

And are you saying that no other email provider ever has service problems?

As I also said, I usually have no trouble with AOL at all. Obviously if this happened often then I would switch, but it doesn't.

I only posted because I was trying to ascertain whether it was a general problem with AOL this morning or something wrong with my laptop (since I've also got a very recent problem when using Windows Explorer, where I get runtime error messages when trying to transfer files to a memory stick).

AOL seems much better this afternoon, though still a bit unstable, so I suspect it's a more general problem which hopefully will soon be resolved.

Only trying to help you...

No one here EDF has replied indicating probs/no probs.

If you use Firefox .. Here is an article relating to AOL problems.. and how to resolve them..

I spend hours reserching this stuff. Happy to share with anyone willing to take the time to read it.

AOL does not support Opera.

Will I get problems if I use Firefox or Opera?

We do not support Opera, however, we do support Firefox 1.5 and 2.0. There are add-ons for Firefox that will help your browser access Internet Explorer-only sites.

Fox..

Until this thread I did not realise people in UK still used AOL (America on Line)

Or the problems that so many people experiance...

Q. I'm not receiving email with AOL - help!

A. AOL are a royal pain when it comes to email.

They are renowned for being rather paternal.

AOL have filters to prevent spam that seem to catch an awful lot of genuine email. You're not advised of this, the email simply never arrives.

On a website now it is preferable to use a form for enquiries rather than list your email address. This is because automated spamware regularly trawls websites to harvest emails to add to their infernal mailing lists.

But as this enquiry now technically comes from a server and not a genuine email via an ISP, AOL will periodically block all (or just some) of these email enquiries.

AOL can periodically block all emails with certain words in. Spam itself being one of them. If i send an email to AOL clients with advice on how to target spam, i'm fairly confident they will never receive it.

Opera is a browser and will connect..

The fact that AOL does not support Opera means that it is not responsible for any problems

you get if you choose Opera as your Browser.

Certain addons / extension may not function correctly..

After all you are having the same problems as many other people.

AOL technology is being updated. When they say:-

We're aware of this issue and should have it fixed soon.

They are not talking about Today..

They are upgrading their entire systems... Could take Months to Develop.

Even then no guaranty their will not be more teething probs..

Fox...

OK Fox, sorry to be snappy when you're trying to help, here's some of the error messages I've been getting.

Maybe you could decipher them for me.

I've cleared the cache, cleared all AOL cookies, and deleted loads of emails as I had over a thousand in my inbox.

I suspect this is all something to do with a new email system which AOL is apparently introducing.

These are all intermittent errors - so far as I been able to get into all my AOL email addresses eventually. However I have printed out all my contacts (took bloody ages) in case it all goes completely (6)

Hi Sue

HTTP Error 400. The request is badly formed.

Googling this strongly suggests this to be a Registry Problem.

This would make perfect sense.

I have Registry-Mechanic - PC Tools installed on All my PCs.

It is not Free I think I pay ?29.00 for Three licences.

It keeps the registry clean when Things get get untidy.

It runs every day at 19.00 and has many other features to keep every thing in place

and find 'Broken' Registry Keys. Permanently delete / shred files.

You got message:- Expected a ':' after a key that may well be part of the problem but the registry

is very complex and serious damage can be done if you try to change things manually.

Apart from running Register Mechanic, not sure what else to suggest, apart from trying to

access your AOL account from another PC/laptop

Fox

Yeh trying the other laptop thing tomorrow. Don't have another one here at the moment.

However I've just downloaded a load of large music files from about six emails which someone had emailed to me, and deleted the emails with the attachments, and it seems to have improved things so fingers crossed :)

Would have thought a registry issue would have caused other probs than just with my emails, but what would I know :))

Every entry in the Registry is specific to a single Entity of your PC.

There are many thousands of them.

For mail alone there will be hundreds of them. Each Key will Have Sub Keys van have further sub Keys

A corrupt Registry 'Key' would only affect one small element of any Programe .

Windows Registry error symptoms can include program lock-ups,

slow PC performance,

freezes and crashes,

startup and shut down problems,

installation errors, and

hardware failure.

Just like your hard drive, your registry needs defraging from time to time.

More so than your hard drive.

Registry Mechanic scans my Registry daily at 19.00 (Time set by me)

and recomends a Registry defrag about once a week. Takes about 2-3 mins to complete.

If you use your computer daily you really should be using a Registry Cleaner.

Registry Mechanic PC Tools Clears up problems before they start to really affect your PC.

Deleting Files , moving files , uninstalling programms often leave bits of the program in the registry

Reinstalling programs will result in duplicate 'Key' Entries. where the programm will misfunction

due to not being able to find correct KEYs and associsted DWORDs which contain all the paramaters

your programm needs to function correctly.

This results in programmes hanging and timeing out.

There will be a KEY / DWORD which will set how long before your programm waits before timing out.

Foxy

Thanks Fox, I will try with another laptop first, as presumably if the problem is with my registry I won't have difficulties with my email from another laptop.

I've also submitted a report to AOL.

They seem to be making a lot of changes to their site at the moment, so I suspect it's something to do with that.

xx

Just another point of view regarding the Windows registry, It contains many thousands of entries and as stated each new program adds more, Having a few dead or invalid entries is not bad having a few hundred is not bad. think of it on the scale of a car-park the size of London having a few dead cars parked up will not effect the situation. Personally I leave the reg alone and have never had an issue. If a particular key is problematic then I would enter the reg editor and single it out. Altering the reg' can cause a lot of problems and if it ain't broke why touch it? (I do not defrag as my system drive is a SSD) Microsoft does not support the use of these cleaners nor is about to develop their own. Ask yourself why?

    • You can always check when they registered on the forum, if you are suspicious. But I recommended Aria, and it certainly wasn't my only post on here, and it was a genuine recommendation. ETA: And he didn't ask me to make it, to the best of my recollection. But even if he had, many local tradespeople ask people to post on here if they are happy with the work that has been done.
    • I am not a patient at this practice, but surely it is more sensible to have an initial  phone discussion, as often the GP wouldn't need to see someone face to face unless they actually needed to physically examine them? This then leaves the available face to face appointments for patients who need them. And if during  the phone call the GP felt you needed examining, then arrangements could be made for a face to face. If you feel your ailment is such that you will definitely need to be physically examined, can you not explain that to the receptionist?
    • Give Labour a chance, they've only been in government for a short time, and they inherited a mess! As regards the notice boards, to the best of my recollection they were originally intended as community notice boards, and certainly not for advertising local businesses (who would decide which businesses  should have the limited space on the boards, anyway?) East Dulwich may have become more gentrified since the boards were first introduced, but that surely doesn't mean they should now be completely  taken over for the benefit of  the "middle classes", to the exclusion of everybody else? As  NewWave says, surely these people have other ways to find out about groups and events of interest to them, which the "non middle classes" may not have access to, and even if they did may not be able to afford them. Several people including myself have complained to councillors about the state of the noticeboards in the past.  I think one of the issues is that they were originally maintained by local volunteers, who may have either moved out of the area or lost interest - or given up in despair when the boards were flypostered and/or vandalised. I completely  agree that the boards should be used for information about not for profit organisations in the area, but if regular maintenance can't be provided and/or they continue to be vandalised, then I think it would be better if they were removed altogether.
