james_ja
just rang up to check about membership - i've seen on other threads the club is very keen for new members/opening times (before seeing this thread). cant say i got the same feeling from the guy on the phone who couldn't wait to put the phone down.I'm keen to join because of other comments and the clubs facilities, it frustrating when the first point of contact for the club is so negative when the need for members is so high... Same guy you spoke to?We didn't bother pursuing it.ETA: Sadly, there are other posts on this forum from other people more or less saying the same thing. So we can't say we weren't warned ..... james_ja
Hi Sue, sounds like it probably is the same guy! I'd be keen to use the snooker tables so in that respect i'd still like to join. Think they need a word with the 'co-oridnator- as to how to try and attract new members/business if they still want a club in a few years....Cora, from other posts i think the membership cost is minimal - there is a number to call but it didn't get me very far. I'd probably suggest heading down there and taking a look/speaking with someone on the day. As Toniw mentioned you can just use the facilities as they get your membership sorted. Sue
james_ja Wrote:I'd probably suggest> heading down there and taking a look/speaking with> someone on the day. xxxxxxDon't bother ringing the bell if it's outside their advertised hours - even if you've phoned up and then been told to go down between certain hours on a certain day when the appropriate people will be there to discuss things with you, if it's not within the hours advertised outside, they won't bother answering the door. When we eventually phoned from the door - having been ringing the bell for some time - said grumpy man appeared, did not say hello or smile, just gestured grumpily that we should go to a side door (a fire exit which was invisible from the front of the building, with no notice indicating it was there, and which we did not even know existed).I'm sure the other people running the place are probably helpful, but Mr Grumpy appears to be the chief.ETA: Just found another thread about this:http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?29,875727,875727#msg-875727 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/23203-dulwich-constitutional-club/#findComment-607760 Share on other sites

Humdinger
Closing September 29th. Apparently the building is worth many multiples of millions of pounds, once the building is flattened. Just so a property developer can come along and chuck up a few flats, sell them for millions and waddle off again. Probably had their eye on this site for years, salivating at the thought! I didnt even get the chance to join up, but i would have if it wasnt being closed down. Surely places like this are worth more to the local community than said expensive flats? caz
Unfortunately the club is closing on the 29th September and the building is being put on the market by the owners, Association of Conservative Clubs after that. As I understand it at present it can only be sold as a licensed premises so unless a buyer can get change of use it can't be turned into flats. Also it is Grade 2 listed. There are a few members, myself included, who are getting together to see if there is anything we can do to keep it as a community space. It is to late to keep the present club open as there was a majority vote to close it last week. Excellent! Please keep us posted!ETA: I don't know whether it would apply, but The Ivy House was saved when it was listed (?) as an Asset of Community Value (I think) - might it be worth having a word with the committee?https://www.ivyhousenunhead.com/about.php Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/23203-dulwich-constitutional-club/#findComment-1359941 Share on other sites

Reg Smeeton
The Dulwich Constitutional Club closed last September. It was quite a remarkable place - the 1970s frozen in time in East Dulwich. Despite being quite a social centre, it was hardly ever mentioned on the Forum. Upstairs were several good snooker tables, with posters of snooker heroes like Jimmy Higgins and Steve Davis on the walls. So what's happening to it? What about that bowling lawn at the back? According to a post earlier on this thread it's a listed building and change of use will be difficult. What will happen to the only bowling lawn in East Dulwich, and to those snooker rooms upstairs? Most mysterious. bidvid
I think it is currently occupied by Guardians. They were fixing the place up recently. Might be worth wandering over and having a chat. They seem quite approachable. Or alternatively, you could contact the guardian company. off the top of my head I am not sure how they are but there is usually a sign on the building. Cheers, Brigid Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/23203-dulwich-constitutional-club/#findComment-1437822 Share on other sites
caz
At the time of the DCC's closure September 2019 it was owned by the Association of Conservative Clubs. Don't know if they are the current owners.
