The switchover was from analogue to digital signal, nothing to do with HD.

If you have a digital TV you just need to retune it, consult your handbook.

If you don't have a handbook try Googling the TV's make and model number with key words like 'handbook' and/or 'retuning'.

This link is helpful...

Oops - OK, so I just tried re-tuning with the help of manual and did all the going through the channels stuff, but no picture ever came up, just lines and fuzz then gets to the end but still saying 'no signal' - has it just given up the ghost or could a freeview box resurrect it? thanks v much

Sounds like you need a freewiew box, as the TV is old you will only be able to recieve a digital signal, but not HD (as it probably has scart sockets as a previous poster also mentioned). If it is connected to an external aerial you'll get all the freeview channels. If it is an internal aerial you'll need to move the aerial around the room until you get a signal. Suggest you invest in a Goodmans freeview box, I did last weekend and now can get digital signal on a 14inch tv.

If you do not have any joy try contacing Bill Coe, he has a shop on Forest Hill Road and is a WIZARD at sorting things like this out, am more than happy to recommend him. 0208 693 5932.

You've still not told us the make and model of the beast.

If the tuning you've done involved a couple or so minutes of it reporting scans through 40 or so different possible multiplexes looking for signals, and probably listing stations found, by name or count, as it continued, your set does have a digital tuner. If that's so, have you told the TV, probably via an on-screen menu, to use the signal from its digital tuner rather than the analogue one?

emc, your portable tv is unlikely to have a HD freeview tuner since (a) your tv was purchased almost five years ago and (b) was a cheap model. HD freeview tuners were expensive since their launch a few years ago.

It may be possible to add HD freeview box to your tv but I would question whether you would notice the difference due to its size. High definition works best in larger sets.

If your tv is a genuine digital set then I suggest the following:

(1) purchase an aerial which can pick up the digital freeview signal. A fuzzy screen will appear on your set if your aerial cannot pick up the signal.

(2) do a factory/ installation option for retuning.

is there a charity that wants our old analogue tvs? do they work in France for examnple ( not that I am saying France is a charity!!!)?

I have an old portable I was goign to put outside my house and see whether someone take a shine to it.............

    • Aleksandra was the driving force behind the conversion of what was a nice but very outdated house into what is now my beautiful, vibrant and modern home. I cannot recommend her enough- she was a pleasure to work with- she has an uncanny eye for detail and her sense of style is unparalleled. She knew where to push me beyond my “safe beige” colours but always kept my personality and preferences in mind. She sourced fabric / colours / lighting designs , she found local options for spectacular interior ideas in the kitchen , display cabinets , bathrooms , bedrooms and wardrobes. She never went beyond budget and was very timely in her execution. The result was a beautiful home that even after 8 years looks as stunning as it did when first put together. It is as liveable as it is beautiful and none of it would have been possible with Alexandra. I truly could not recommend her highly enough- there are few people with her work ethic and style. Thank you Alexandra !

    • Maybe once you have left and have nothing to lose, name and shame him on appropriate local forums? Assuming he doesn't have loads of mates who would then make life "difficult" for you,of course ......
