Domitianus
What really obnoxious sayings and phrases bug the h**l out of posters here? The one that really p****s me off is people who claim to "work hard and play harder". My God, what crazy, way-out, dangerous and enviable characters they must be!!!! They clearly send the word 'hell-raiser' back to the dictionary for re-definition!Any other bug-bears? Muttley
Have you noticed that these days everything is "uber"? Uber-ironic, uber-smooth, uber-cultured. It's pretentious twaddle, and is being uber-done in my opinion. annaj
Sean beat me to it with literally. Also, misuse of reflexive pronouns, usually in a misguided attempt to sound clever or formal. "If you could just fill out that form and return it to MYSELF" Aarrgghhh Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/2286-really-obnoxious-sayings-and-phrases/#findComment-65962 Share on other sites
SeanMacGabhann
your example made me chuckle Annajanother one which hacks me off is how "in terms of" has LITERALLY entered common parlance for no good reason"What is Franklins like in terms of pubs in East Dulwich?"This thread is bad for my blood pressure - some unfortunate is going to say something at work tomorrow and I'll.... do something Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/2286-really-obnoxious-sayings-and-phrases/#findComment-65966 Share on other sites

There was a documentary about it years ago on Radio 4. The Australians popularised it, but I think it was traced back to California. It almost certainly caught on in Britain thanks to Neighbours. Another reason to despise that programme. PeckhamRose
Yeah and people that talk in, like, similes.I also get mischievous when faced with "Just take a seat", and then I take one.Or, "Just [do whatever] for me." For you? I thought we were here for MY benefit.Or, "What was your name?" It was - and still IS - PeckhamRose."How are we spelling that?" dave
"End of"Fine as part of a sentence, but just really irritating when left standing alone as some kind of shorthand (generally indicating that the speaker is some sort of dullard).
