All that Western-influenced "another take on vegetables" stuff is a bit facile, really.

If you're going to eat vegetables, they're best as just that - vegetables!

They don't need reconstituting as a 'sausage', 'bacon', or 'mince meat' (which 'meat' exactly ?).

Asian recipes usually best IMO for vegetables, or just eat them raw !

?1.50 for 100g is actually quite expensive (google it).

You are paying for the unnecessary packaging.

BTW people add turmeric to food for health reasons, not because they are on a plant-based diet :)

Sainsbury's price per kilo is ?15.

You can get it online for less than that.

For example:

https://www.realfoods.co.uk/product/21503/organic-fresh-turmeric

?12.75 a kilo, or ?1.28 per ?100.

The Amazon price you quoted is ?58.10 a kilo!!!!

I have edited my post above.

Sainsbury's is ?15 a kilo.

Amazon is ?58 a kilo.

Here is ?12.75 a kilo:

https://www.realfoods.co.uk/product/21503/organic-fresh-turmeric

ETA: If you think it is ?8 for 100g in Bellenden Road- which would be ?80 a kilo, which obviously nobody with any sense would pay - how about providing some evidence?

ETA: Organic Village sell it. I have bought it there in the past. I can't remember how much it was.

And as Malumbu said, there are probably loads of other shops in Peckham and elsewhere around here which sell it, but I'm not going out much at the moment, for obvious reasons.

Fresh turmeric will keep in the fridge for a couple of weeks.

When frozen, it'll last for up to six months.

Why would anyone need 1 Kilo of fresh Turmeric. ??

If you freeze it then it is no longer fresh when defrosted.

Also Studies typically use doses of 500?2,000 mg of turmeric per day.

So 100grm will be more than enough.

Hi Sue, my husband and I have been vegan for a few years and can't recommend it enough! We've never felt or looked better :)

It does seem a bit daunting at first but we've found our cooking is so much more creative now we aren't eating meat and 3 vege every night. There are some bril meat alternatives on the market too if you need a meaty fix. Sainsburys Forest Hill just expanded their plant-based section recently and M&S ED has a great range of quick fix meals as well.

My go to for recipes is just instagram, and I love these two: https://www.wearesovegan.com/

DulwichFox, I am comparing prices :)

If you don't want to look at prices per kilo, I gave you a price (above) of ?1.28 per 100g at Real Foods.

In any case, many people would buy a kilo and split it with friends. I know lots of people who do that with various "whole foods" online.

Your original post seemed to be solely to have a pop at the local traders in Bellenden Road, and by implication the people who shop there.

Yet you haven't actually told us what the price of fresh turmeric is at any of the shops in Bellenden Road, for example the shop which has lots of very good quality vegetables outside (assuming it sells it).

I have no idea why you posted it on this thread, where turmeric has to the best of my knowledge never been mentioned, fresh or otherwise :)) probably because most people don't eat turmeric as part of a plant-based diet :))

Oh, and obviously anything frozen is "no longer fresh" when defrosted. But frozen peas, for example, are better than fresh peas (unless you have cooked them straight from picking them yourself) because peas, like many vegetables, lose their nutritional value very quickly after they have been picked.

According to this:

https://www.turmericforhealth.com/turmeric-queries/can-you-freeze-fresh-turmeric-root-and-for-how-long

the freezing process preserves most of the turmeric root's nutritive qualities, as you would expect, so I'm not sure what your point is?

And just to add, shopping in Bellenden Road is supporting local traders. If you don't like the prices (assuming you actually know what they are) then nobody is forcing you to shop there :))

Shopping in Sainsbury's is supporting a massive chain.

Thanks KerryH, I've been happily plant-based since I originally started the thread!

I have a freezer full of home cooked plant-based meals, plus three ring binders of recipes :))

Though I am no longer strictly vegan, as the vegan diet I was on gave me digestive problems :(

ETA: Oh and I do occasionally eat fish.

Nnobody is telling you what to do, Foxy, but you seem very anti the shops in Bellenden Road for some reason, as you seem to have come onto this thread just to have a go at them out of the blue?

ETA: Oh, and Sainsbury's had loads of shops in the fifties. It was a chain then! It started in 1869! Amazing what you can find out by googling!

By the fifties, it had even gone self-service in some stores (not the one in Streatham Hill, though).

https://www.sainsburyarchive.org.uk/timeline/150

The first self-service store that I remember was Waitrose in Streatham, which opened in 1955 just up from St Leonard's Church. Made a change from shopping with my mum in Home and Colonial, just a little way down the hill on the other side of the church :))

I have just looked back through the thread and seen that I asked about where to get fresh turmeric, so profuse apologies, Foxy 🦊

Still don't know why you are so against the Bellenden Road shops though. You specifically mentioned them as being very expensive.

And they are not much more of a walk for you than Sainsbury's is! Down CPR and Adys Road and you're nearly there!

I am a fan of Dr Greger, too.

I surf Instagram a lot to find whole food plant based or vegan accounts.

As well as How Not to Die/Diet (and the cookbook), I gather that @govegan has just published a recipe book.

And I found that the BBC GoodFood website has some fabulous receipts. I also highly rate the website called Love and Lemons.

I love eating wfpb - I have lost (intentionally) 30lbs since the last week of July doing this and eliminating sugar, flour, alcohol and snacks from my eating habits. Food now tastes amazing and I am sure it is because I am eating nothing processed (aside from tofu and oat milk).

Good luck with your researches :)

    • Thanks to all for the comments and advice.  I have now reported the incident to the police.
    • Thanks everyone for your comments, all of which I’ve taken something from. I originally posted to warn and help others learn from my experience – hence the title, first and last words of the post. However, the process of posting and reading your comments has helped me better make sense of what felt ‘off’ about the incident, why and what I’d do differently next time. I hadn’t expected this outcome, so thank you.  It’s also yielded several ‘golden nugget’ insights, one of which I share here for others. For context, I’m a longtime SE22 resident, who lives on a street with a primary school, so am used to scooting, cycling, walking with buggies, small children, pets etc. I like where I live and have never been struck on a pavement by anyone, on wheels or otherwise. I’ve been fortunate. When walking down Carlton Avenue towards Dulwich Village yesterday, I was on the left-hand side of the pavement but – ‘golden nugget’ approaching – not as close to people’s front garden walls as I could have been. The cyclist came from behind and overtook on the inside i.e. passed between me and the wall. The gap was too narrow and he hit my leg. For clarity, my original post was about the lack of adult supervision of a child. There’s been much comment here about the cyclist’s age. I didn’t know he was 4, until his father told me. I felt that this was a tactic – along with telling me I was over-reacting, talking about intent, apologising undercut with ‘but’ and laughing – to downplay and avoid taking responsibility for his part in the situation. But I accept that is my perception, readers weren’t there and may think differently. What also felt ‘off’ is that the father didn’t see what happened or ask any questions to find out. What happened? Where did he hit you? How hard? Are you alright? Is my son alright? Is everyone alright? This sounds obvious but wasn’t to me until last night. Back to age. Is the age of the cyclist important? If you consider it from the perspective of a four-year-old, it might be. He’s on his bike, helmet on, speeding along, sees a gap and thinks he can get through it. He doesn’t know and/or may never have been told about the risks (to himself and others) of undertaking on the left. Hits pedestrian. I was not expecting to be hit from behind or the undertaking. But had I walked closer to the wall – and not left a potentially inviting gap – this probably wouldn’t have happened. This is just one ‘golden nugget’ I will take away. It’s something I can easily do, doesn’t depend on anyone else doing anything differently, and could contribute towards keeping myself and others safe. All in all, posting here has been unexpectedly useful for me. I hope for others, too. I feel able to move forward with learnings, so thank you guys.
    • Scorpio Dry Cleaners (in the parade of shops at the top of Herne Hill) has closed. The shopfront is being renovated and will be reopened as therapy rooms by Herne Hill Space.  I take this as evidence that we're all more stressed than before, despite being more casually dressed...
