I see this over and over. Conservatives are for limited government. Just because we say we don't want government doing things where government is inept, counterproductive, wasteful or whatever, does not mean that we should shut it down totally.

Yes, we do need roads, bridges, power stations, motorways, jails, schools, the military, standard weights and measures, courts, etc etc. But not every aspect of the country's infrastructure needs to fall under the remit or stewardship of the government. The conservative view is that the government should be a useful servant of the people's needs. However, you give it too much money, power, authority it becomes the worst kind of master.

But those black sheep among the left who don't think much of socialism (or haven't yet been assimilated) are far outweighed by their 'comrades' who subscribe to and espouse its destructive ideology. And I disagree, in that from my experience most "proper liberals" (whatever that entails) do lean towards a big, all-powerful centralised government.

Liberals are not necessarily lefties. Liberals don't believe in big government. I'd suggest you get a better understanding of Liberalism before trying to start such a debate. At the moment it's all a bit silly.

    • That's bad! Bad Thames Water! Are you sure you haven't got a leak somewhere? I think there's some way of monitoring that by checking the meter readings before and after a period when you aren't using any water? Eg overnight?
