I had a really horrid experience yesterday in the park when a man and his dog on an extended dog lead ( fully extended )

Came towards me and my dog . I was sat on a bench with my dog a few feet away but this dog lead ( like string ) extended right across the path ( so dangerous for anyone coming the other way ) the dog with him ran under my dog and through her front legs looping the string lead round one of her legs then tried to run off lassoing my dogs leg which obviously sent my dog into panic and she squeezed and yelped and pulled back tightening the string . Thank god I managed to calm her enough to free her as it could have resulted in a broken leg .

Please if anyone has one of these leads then reel it in on the footpath or around others to avoid this happening ! Thanks

Extended dog leads are a pain in the streets- if you are a driver whose vehicle is 'off road' in front garden, you cannot see small dogs on long leads as you pull out especially, if like me you have a small fence. Also for those with restricted vision and mobility they are dangerous. I think they are fine in good open spaces like the park but not in areas where there are pedestrians or footpaths.

I often come across these long thin leads when I'm out running in Peckham Rye and they're a nightmare as you don't see them until you're nearly upon them. I wish people would realise that if they stand on one side of the path and their dog is far off on the other side it's like an invisible tripwire for anyone else coming along, especially if it's a small dog.

Poor you, OP, hope your dog is OK.

Long leads can, clearly, be dangerous when used wrongly, but as long as dogs are 'reeled in' if they approach people, or if they try to cross over paths, then, properly used, they can allow dogs to run more naturally whilst their owners remain in contact/ in control of them. Obviously they should not be used just to allow the owner to remain static whilst the dog is effectively out of control. And they should be used sensibly and preferably well away from paths, cycle tracks etc.

    • General view is it is tokenistic from Iran, not looking to harm life but show that they are retaliating. Same thing happened after the earlier Israeli attack back in the distant part. There will be debate, even at the top of the Iranian authorities.  Israel even without the US hold the cards.  Although are in this position due to decades of US support. As per my post on the other thread much of the reason the world is in this position is botched US post second world war middle East policy.  Supporting both sides in the Iran/Iraq war being particularly striking Trump mark 1 emboldened the right wing in Israel, perhaps pushed Hammas to more extreme action, and led to the Iranians going rogue on nukes.  I think that the latter was to put them in a stronger position in opening up grade, a country not able to sell vast quantities of oil ,(and gas?) But how does the world move on from this mess? By all means give other views to my simplistic ones
    • The NYT ( that right wing alarmist rag) has reported that Iran told Qatar so they could prepare. Iran and Q are on good terms so Q won’t retaliate, esp as Iran is only targeting US bases, which everyone knew to expect.     If anything, it draws Qatar into the dialogue and Q will privately be urging Iran to back down.
    • If the Qatari's decide to retaliate then it's all going off...but I suspect the Iranians are hoping for this - one inaccurate missile and the Qatari's may have to. I think the Iranian leadership is working on fast-tracking their own demise and the Americans and Israeli's planning for regime change, maybe with the many political prisoners the Israelis tried to free from the Elvin prison today. What a mess but clearly Iran was becoming a big threat to not only Israel but many of the other Gulf States and was clearly doing scary stuff with nuclear weapons that required action.
