I spoke the the gardener and he said they are going to dig that patch over and totally reseed it a bit of an experiment I think he said, its a heavily used area because of the football, so maybe a different strain of grass. I think they have sprayed it to kill it off before digging over, can't remember what he said properly!
it does look awful. I was walking our doggies on the day they did it. the usual team of park gardeners had just makred out the football pitch when the other guys turned up and dismantled the goalposts and started spraying. they told me the spraying would not affect the grass surface. as you can see in the pic the whole thing is a mess. perhaps a certain vocal councillor could tell us what is going on and why. a big ask, I know

I'm pretty sure that this is the first stage in works to improve drainage of this part of the park. There have been problems with waterlogging. (So it looks awful now but in the longer term will be better(tu))

I shall get more details about the schedule and post here

Renata

I'm curious Renata regarding waterlogging as this part of the park in my experience does not suffer from it. Waterlogging is a problem on the common for sure but I would say this section of grass was probably suffering more from uneven drainage (causing parts of it to crack due to lack of rainfall) rather than waterlogging. I suspect the plan is to put two football pitches there next season as opposed to one.

I disagree. There has always been one field allocated for sports and football (the one behind the swing park) and the common is too waterlogged most of the time in winter to be much use for anything. I have played football there for 18 months now and have never seen a passer by hit by a ball. I have seen lots of dogs urinate on people's property though.

Also the pitches are not in constant use either BUT what I would say is that I wouldn't want to see any more encroachment in the park for use as football pitches.

djkilla...

two years ago there were two pitches on this area. the very dry summer cracked the entire surface so they took thrm out of commission for remedial work.

there were always two pitches here, but this year it has been reduced to one. now the remedial work is at last under way.

whatever do you mean by encroachment? this is a public park. parks have football pitches. get over yourself. there is plenty of room for us all. I walk my two little doggies every day and have never felt crowded out by young boys playing football
