Yes, that's a very good point. I like the way you word it!

To the best of my understanding, the gist of the R4 discussion and other reports I've read, is that schools do matter but not much. I then find myself asking, Why do people get so wound up about schools? Is it b/c schools are perceived (rightly or wrongly) as being inextricably linked to socio-economic environment?

I think "better schools" is quite often code for "not living in an overpriced shoebox of a house and being woken by sirens in the middle of the night". I can quite understand people wanting to move for a whole host of reasons (including shoeboxes and sirens), but the emphasis on it being solely for the children's education seems, well, a little skewed to me.

Otta: "I think what some people may describe as "better" (and I am NOT talking about Saffron) is probably more accurately described as "white middle class twee"."

:)) Yes, I think this often boils down to a lifestyle issue.

Yes, totally agree. Is it that moving involves a lot a sacrifice, and people don't feel they would do it just for themselves. So, when children come along, parents would then be willing to make the leap, in the name of "better schools" (whatever that means to them personally)?

    • A huge thank you to Julian Richards for fitting our custom wardrobes in two of our bedrooms, we are so happy with the results, they really feel a 'part of the room', super integrated with the space. Julian was a joy to work with, extremely helpful talking through the various options to help make decisions around the look and feel of the wardrobes vs the storage space, and approaches the build in a very methodically and logical manner, ensuring all our needs are taken into account to deliver a space that works for us and our lives. An excellent carpenter and a pleasure to have in the house. I highly recommend working with Julian!
    • Yes - and this is a good thing because meeting housing targets is a good thing. If Labour or any other party had managed to do it consistently over the last decade perhaps we wouldn't be in a housing crisis. I'm not sure if "don't build more housing because it's only rich foreigners that will end up living there" is official Lib Dem policy or not.
    • Does anyone know of anywhere local where I can hire a large shredder? The new Library of Things in the Leisure Centre doesn't presently have one, apparently because they are in the process of getting new improved  ones. I would have preferred to use them, but I  need to dispose of a very large amount of stuff,  and I don't want to wait indefinitely. There's too much of it to dispose of by other methods, like soaking in the bath, and anyway I want to recycle it once it's shredded.
