Meet New People In East Dulwich

I helped organise Forum drinks years ago, still organise the monthly curry club and know a number of other social event organisers. Lessons are:

Don't expect or seek consensus about the date, just pick one

Give a months notice

Try and avoid personal chat on the thread, makes it seem cliquey

Go for a weekend, avoid obviously busy weekends though - bank holidays, beginnings of school hols

Some people will complain, ignore them, if they were that concerned they would have organised it themselves

Expect some thanks, some complaints and a lot of seeming apathy

Ask friends to post on the thread positively, that encourages more people to be positive and turn up

Expect a limited turn out first time round, turning up to meet complete strangers can be a bit scary

Don't be discouraged if few people turn up first time round, these things gain momentum over time

Social events often have a natural life cycle. A group of people meet, become friends and regulars, organise their own social meet ups, start to move away from ED and the social event fades away. That's life

Like Charliebubs, I will come along and know other long term Forumites that will turn out.

Just pick a date and a pub ........

And that's exactly what Michael P and Georgia are talking about - for many years they organised successful monthly drinks sessions where at times we'd get 30+ people turning up - really suggest you take their advice about how to organise as they are speaking from experience.

You can't expect people to be free at short notice but give enough notice and promote enough and you should be fine - just be aware the summer isn't the greatest time to start as lots of people are away and more so than over the autumn / winter.

I am Asking if people are available to meet up,

That's all and to say a day they want to meet

* There's no hurry ! When ever you are free to meet

and talk about what ever they want etc;

* Music

* Politics

* The news

* Your / There hobbies

* Even talk about the forum

* Whatever you people want to discuss about

Just NOT your personal information

Natty, we've been having such events on and off for many years and everyone has managed just fine without suggested topics of conversation.

As for not sharing your personal information, I am not sure quite what you mean by this, but people tend to come to these events hoping to meet people they are ultimately going to become friends with (I have made a number of friends at these events), and whilst I wouldn't exactly suggest sharing your deepest darkest secrets (if you have any) with people you've just met, you can't make friends with people without sharing anything personal about yourself.

Just follow Georgia and Mike's advice - they've managed to arrange many successful meet ups over the years (Mike still does via the curry club - which is a great way to meet people).

Life, the universe and everything?

Somewhat embarrassingly I got ahead of myself with this suggestion and overlooked the fact that we're not actually around on that date. Can I therefore suggest the following Saturday (18th) instead, same time, same place?

    • A fair amount hangs on SCOTUS in the coming days. Will they prop up Trump's powers under Executive Orders or choose to support Congress? Some of the Judges are clearly corrupt but perhaps others, like Coney Barrett, will grow a conscience.
