zeban
I'm trying to decide on a vegetarian restaurant to take my Mum to for her 60th Birthday. It can be anywhere in London. Does anyone have any recommendations? aligs
Vanilla Black Nr Chancery Lane isnice for a celebration or Carnavale on Whitecross St in the City for a less formal setting. Otherwise The Gate in Hammersmith. There are quite a lot of posh Micelin places with veggie tasting menus now but obv depends on howuch you want to spend! Bellenden Belle
I second The Gate in Hammersmith and there speaks a devoted carnivore, so they must be doing something right. zeban
Thanks all. definitely no tasting menu- can't afford those! Has anyone actually been to Vanilla Black?- it looks interesting but I'm not sure if it's a bit gimmicky and you'ld come out feeling starving and a bit miffed! Twirly
I'd recommend The Gate too, particularly for a special birthday.Rasa W1 in Derring St is no longer exclusivley veggie, and for a slightly posher feel the one on Charlotte Street might be better (it used to be fish and veggie, but I haven't been for a while). If you don't need exclusively veggie, then Tas EV near Southwark tube does great food and goes down well with veggies and carnivores alike, plus they will adapt for things like wheat allergies. And although it's probably not special enough for a birthday, Mildreds in Soho does good exclusively veggie food too. Cassius
Another vote for The Gate - lovely imaginative vegetarian food without feeling at all 'lentils & sandals', also a good wine list. Senor Chevalier
If I had to go to a non-meat restaurant then I'd be tempted to try this speciality cheese restaurant. Oh and they do foie gras...http://artdufromage.co.uk/ Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/21848-best-vegetarian-restaurant-in-london-recommendations-please/#findComment-520917 Share on other sites
Twirly
Am afraid that Eat and Two Veg is no longer there (unless they've moved from the top of Marylebone High Street). Such a shame. zeban
Thanks so much to all of you :-). I think if it wasn't for the distance I'd definitely go for The Gate (my Mum lives in Hackney). It's still a massive posibility but there's one I've found on the net called Manna in Primrose Hill. Has anyone ever been here before? zeban
Don't worry e-dealer, I was a strict veggie for 10 years so know that this isn't a veggie restaurant. Foie gras senor Chevalier!!!! think that could actually ruin my Mum's birthday! iceicebaby
The whole meal cafe in Streatham is excellent. They haven't changed the menu for 30 years, which is a good thing! Cassius
Went to Mildreds last night and tbh wouldn't recommend it for a 60th - mainly because you cannot book a table, so have to take pot luck, and although there is no pressure to eat up and go you cannot help but be aware of the bar that is full of people waiting for a table. Finally the acoustics are not great so once it gets full up it can be quite hard to hear the other people in your party. The food itself is fine but I don't think the restaurant itself is up to a 'special' meal. RosieH
If your mum lives in Hackney, have you considered Saf in Shoreditch? Never been myself (confirmed omnivore) but I pass it regularly and it looks lovely. Has good reviews too.
