Despite his great eccentricities, when he was being sensible he was a very intelligent man to talk to. Sadly most of the time you couldn't get any sense out of him at all. He did indeed run the photographic studios and was still involved in photography into the early 1970's. I have seen some of his work. In his day he was very good. I don't know about his famous ancestors. He was definitely a character in Camberwell Church Street. Everybody knew him. A lot of the time his dogs smelt better than he did and spoke more sense. SeanMacGabhann
Sorry to resurrect this thread but I went to the Roxy Bar and Cinema yesterday to see "The Adventures of Flannery - a portrait of Cathal Coughlan"In one of the interview pieces he talks about this woman walking up and down LL in Dulwich - I was as surprised to hear LL mentioned in a cinema doc as I was anything else Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/2183-white-woman-of-camberwell/page/2/#findComment-126915 Share on other sites
giggirl
I remember the white lady well. I also remember the pint pincher from the Phoenix. I have a common name and in the 90s I found myself accidentally sectioned thanks to a screw up between the Maudsley and Melbourne Grove Group Practice. It was a bugger to sort out and it meant that every time I saw my doctor I had to have a dreary conversation about whether I was on/off my meds. In the end the section only came of my records when the other lady died - sad. Tony.London Suburbs
I saw this Lady twice back in the 1990's too.Did Dennis Noble have a photographic Studio opposite Victoria Grove where the East Kent Coaches stopped from Victoria? charliecharlie
yes... dear Denis Noble and the white lady of Camberwell, a time when eccentrics were part of the character of the area.I lived on Lyndhurst Grove and often used to see both of them around and about, harmlessly doing their own thing. I remember Denis's house was open to the elements at the back and he slept curled up with is dogs to keep warm at night to survive the winter. I am pretty sure he was a photographic journalist before his mental health issues took over, but not sure where his studio was... I have Pimlico in the back of my mind... Laur
Wow thanks for posting that Jah Lush - I remember her walking along Upland road in years gone by. I have also seen her quite recently near Blackfriars, not as white, and she seems like a pleasant lady. Lynne
I heard she'd been jilted by a man for a white woman. I once saw her inadvertently scare the living daylights out of a big West Indian lad on the bus. He was twice her size but fled at a speed Bolt would have been hard put to match when she materialized on the top deck. Otta
She is a tall woman. I remember my first encounter with her when I was maybe 15/16. I turned a corner off Lordship Lane and almost walked straight in to her. It was dark, and she was just almost glowing. I'd heard mention of her, but it hadn't quite prepared me for the real thing.Poor lady had some real mental health issues, but has been doing a lot better in more recent years by all accounts. And I am sure at that time (early 90s) she actually lived in ED. Back in the 90s she used to literally paint herself with proper thick emulsion paint. A CPN friend of mine once told me (about 10 years ago) that she'd regularly be sectioned so that the paint could be taken off because it didn't allow her skin to breathe and was not good for her at all. edcam
I agree bodsier. I had never seen this thread before and many of the posts are old but it typifies the insensitive and ghoulish nature of some forum posters, treating this woman as entertainment.
