That sounds OK, or are Youngs evil now (I certainly wasn't happy with them closing the Wandsworth brewery)? If it means there are a few decent proper bitter options on (I was in the Morpeth Arms on Millbank the other day and it reminded me that they still brew a decent pint) instead of the ubiquitous IPAs and craft beers that have dominated in there recently that would be nice.

The current staff are really nice though so hope they are kept on, and that they keep their policy of allowing at least one TV to show the rugby even if it's not an international.

True, I should have said Charles Wells still brew a good pint for Youngs!

zerkalo I think geh knows about the sale! Very sad, another piece of our heritage flogged to the highest bidder.

The statues will be standing in the same

Tree-muffled squares, and look nearly the same.

Our children will not know it?s a different country.

All we can hope to leave them now is money.

Philip Larkin, "Homage to a Government"

Since the old bar was ripped out and the tiny bar installed it has become a soulless place to drink.

Most Dulwich Hamlet supporters give it a miss and head for the East Dulwich Tavern which has become their base camp.

Youngs are welcome to it.

It does lack any sort of homely vibe, I admit. But it's OK... the staff are really welcoming, and the interior's a vast improvement over the old, hideous purple theme.

Yes, I admit the staff are very pleasant.

I generally only pop in before getting my train to South Bermondsey when going to see Millwall play.

I think that may be an Urban Myth.

There may be some truth in the story but probably blown out of all proportion.

A good tale to tell

Foxy.

"They used to have Open Mic night on Mondays - which was really popular with some local musicians."

JohnL,

Yes, it has been running for some while on the first Monday of each month, also really popular with some people who come as audience. The next date should be next Monday 4th Feb, but with the change in ownership, who knows? Keep an eye on the What's On section.

Also from time to time, excellent gigs from our local swing band the Fabulous Honeys.

I must say I have been in the cherry tree a few times and I like the new refurbishment, once a month they have the DJ from house of tippler and it gets really busy. It is so much better than it was a few years ago, nice friendly staff and the beer is much better than the EDT which I just cant understand why it gets so busy. The cherry tree is much better in my eyes but we all have different opinions.

I like the great expedition at the moment amazing food

I had a chat with one of the bar staff (manager? Not sure) the other day and he had the impression that it was going to be a "soft touch" takeover without drastic changes so hopefully the pub will keep its (many, in my opinion) good features and events.

What happened to the plans to make the upper floors a hostel, does anyone know? Nothing seems to have been done in that respect, did they get knocked back or just decide to drop it?
