Whilst Fazer was a bit of a knob on that Rocca thread I'm also backing his general view of The Dog.

The Village businesses are (mostly) lazy in their service offering and frequently outdone by what you'll now find on Lordship Lane. The Dog trades on it's prime location and past glories but beyond that it's crap food, service and uninspired staff. They really need to up their game but the tragedy of it is they don't really have to.

I like the idea of the hotel if executed well and hope that will lead to new management downstairs and the place improving.

Does anyone think the locals would know a good eatery if they had one?

Let?s look at what there is ?. Crocka watery dudu, Pedigree Dog garbage, Pizza Express ?the best of a bad lot? and a Cafe Rubbish.

My theory WAS it?s the Water ? in the village.

But I think it?s the customers in their ignorance they?ll eat just about anything.

If they knew good food then that lot would be out of business.

The Dulwich Estate Freeholder has a lot to blame as quality family owned resturants owned resturants would never pass the Lease requirments unless they paid a higher rent and that would just kill they wouldn?t be able make a profit.

SO

Village People + Dulwich Estate = C??P food.

I do agree that the Dog in its current form is a tragedy.

Mind you the whole village is flabby food wise.

Pizza Express is probably the most honest offer. Except when I say that outloud it sounds ridiculous.

Is Pizza Express the best we can hope for.

NOOOOOOOOoooooo

No reason at all why it couldn't, I'm sure it could do very well. I think Beauberry House had fine-dining aspirations a few years ago, they had an expensive menu featuring wagyu beef, foie gras, etc. But the food and the interior just weren't up to scratch.

:)

Ah yes I have....

My current Fav's are.

The Palmerston "excellent but expensive"

Ganapati

Lorenzo's and Si Mangia for Italian.

The Prince Regent Dulwich Road Herne Hill great Pub with excellent food.

Mr Liu for takeaway Chinese, though the last one wasn?t that great ?. I?m looking for a Chinese recommendation anyone ?

Thai Corner Cafe but they're slipping a little and prices now HIGH.

There are others but I end up going to the above most weeks when I'm in the UK and don?t fancy doning a chefs hat.

Beagle - that's what I thought but then Karter (who seems to know about these things) quoted the rates for the latest village unit let (Oddbins, retail use )and they were not too far off "indie" ED rates per annum / sq ft2. ?70-80k was it?

The Estate is actually a registered Charity so it's interested in maximising rents like anyone else - but they could do with looking a bit beyond that at the "true amenity value" and spin off from doing stuff that's more inspired. Dulwich Village has literally everything else going for it apart from a decent (i.e. above average) commercial offering.

Who actually manages the leases.

I know it's the "Estate" but who is MR/MS BIG at dishingoutdulwichvillageleases.com

Are they from Bromley or somewhere tedious like that.

WHOEVER it is I imagine they are a marks & sparks suede-cardigan-wearing-Rover-driving nitwit.

They've got a wife called Barbara or a husband called Roger. S/he's booked the same holiday with the same travel firm for the last 20 years. Their children are accountants or surveyors or conveyancing solicitors. And they have 2 grandchildren, one called Aimee and one called Christopher.

I dispise them and their Primula Light on Nimbble bread Chardonnay drinking frikkin sandwich faces.

I hope they go on holiday and for once take a different tour bus which goes up a mountain, never to be seen again.

Then and only then, will we get something different in the village of the damned.

Regardless of ingredients I suspect it's more about the cooking skills employed for Fazer.

Surely this is the best post of the year to date.

    • There's been a spate of phone snatching around East Dulwich station and along Lordship Lane. But don't let that put you off the area, these things come and go. I've never had an issue late at night in the areas you talk about and I've been around here for 18yrs (before I moved I had the same concerns as you). Go visit your areas late at night at different times for your own peace of mind (I did)
    • Posted September 20, 202Hello all Hello all Just a quick message to say I've just had a job postponed so I have some time available to do some work for you if you should need a painter around the end of the month. I also do a variety of other jobs too so if anyone needs a handyman, please feel free to get in touch. Happy to do a free quote. Thanks for reading
    • So sorry to hear this. Our bike was stolen from outside Dulwich Library earlier this month. We had a D Lock and they still got through. Probably the same person who’s just cruising up and down the lane. I hope you find it.
    • Hi, I would like to raise some awareness around East Dulwich especially on Lordship lane.  Today my bike electric bike was stolen from in front of my house between the hours of 9:00 and 10:45. If anyone see anything I would be very grateful.  Please do not use a chain lock to lock your bike. Preferably a d-lock. My bike was double locked with two chains and they still manage to take it. Be careful and be aware of Thief.  Here are some pictures of my bike. If you see or hear anything I would really appreciate it.
