Thanks to everyone who came to the last meeting.

Our next meeting is on 17th September at 8.00pm in the Clockhouse.

Our chosen book is Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil by John Berendt.

I met up with the partner of Bianca Son yesterday. Sadly Bianca died suddenly on 30th June. Bianca had just finished her PhD at Soas and was looking forward to having more time for activities such as the book club. She had a very interesting life and I will send out a brief synopsis soon.

Hope to see you all soon.

The next meeting is on 29th October at the Clockhouse. Sorry it's so far away but lots of time to read the book.

For those of you who new Bianca I have sent a brief history of this remarkable woman.

For those of you who never met her you are welcome to read her history.

For those who ordered books, they are at Rye Books.

Thanks,

Chick

Greetings,

Michel Faber's Latest book.

I have seven copies of this not yet published book for any takers if you are prepared to review it and it may be some of you will have a video interview.

It's called "The Book of Strange New Things" and these copies are not proof read so are unusual and may be fun. First come first served.

Thanks

Chick.

Those who wanted copies they are in Rye books waiting for collection.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 26th November at the Clockhouse in the Blake room upstairs.

Claire can you send me an email address please.

We will set a date for our December meal, probably Wednesday 10th of December, how does that suit you?

Cheers

Dear book clubbers,

The general feeling I am getting is the preference for the December meal is the Sema Thai in Lordship Lane on the 10th 0r 11th December. I have no preference for the dates but will you please let me know your preferred date and are you happy with Sema Thai or would you prefer somewhere else? There are several good Indian restaurants including Tandoori Nights and a good Chinese. The sooner we book the better.

There are still two books to collect from Rye Books.

See you on the 26th.

Cheers

Chick

Hi all

Sorry to have missed the last get together. Still on holiday and only just finished 'The other side of the bridge', which I thought was fantastic. Not sure I can make the Christmas meal as land that day. I see the next book has been chosen so will get onto downloading it ready for the 7th.

Wishing you all a very merry Christmas and see you all in the new year.

    • The community noticeboards I see are incredibly out of date,  who has the key? anyone step forward?
    • Where to begin? I'm middle class and am quite happy for them to be used for information about voluntary/not for profit/non commercial events, they should not be used as a means of free advertising for businesses, small or otherwise, they are just not large enough.  Commjnity groups do not have the money to advertise to increase awareness of the services they offer. The examples you have given which you would like to see them used for may reflect your own priorities but the community of East Dulwich reflects a much wider range of interests and requirements. The  notice boards were introduced in 2011 when East Dulwich had already gentrified and their purpose discussed in the EDF thread announcing their arrival.
    • The notice boards are a reasonable size, surely there should be room for both types of leaflets, after all we are meant to be a community? Unless space is extremely limited, it feels a little divisive for a councillor to say private businesses cannot post. All businesses are important for the lifeblood of a community too, aren't they?
    • Hilarious. Yes, they have magic wands and can make the last 14yrs of public asset stripping disappear overnight 🙄
