Jah Lush
*Bob* we're English. Part of being English is taking the piss/having a sense of humour. You should know that. You do it so well yourself. *Bob*
I was in a(nother) proper pub before Christmas in the Midlands, and this Sikh dude walked in with a delivery - and one of the grizzled regulars asked him of he kept curry sandwiches under his turban!!!! It was all in jest, of course, and crashingly brilliant - and I was reminded of how brilliant proper pubs were. Someone talked about cliques earlier on.. well that's what these places are. A territorial clique. When you're in, you're ok - and it's all a bit of a laugh. You probably don't really even notice - and you cut old wotsit loads of slack because he doesn't mean any harm and all that. I like proper pubs, a bit of non-threatening lairyness is fine and even the occasional nutter helps things along. The difference is that most of the good proper pubs are more full, and being full smooths over the rough edges. But when it gets down a few core people with one or two who basically aren't particularly nice (unless you've decided to cut them loads of slack because you they're alright innit and don't mean any harm etc) who treat a pub like and extension of their front room - well that's when new people who pop in don't tend to come back - and suddenly the place has died on its arse. Otta
I have to say, I've never seen a mobility scooter parked outside the CPT. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/21228-a-dark-day-the-cpt-lounged/page/3/#findComment-512048 Share on other sites
Jah Lush
Good points *Bob* and nice bit of irony shoved in as well. You're right of course. Admittedly, apart from when there is a big game on telly the pub is almost empty most of the time and has been dying on it's arse for quiet a few years now. And, not everyone wants to watch football and maybe put up with the odd unpleasant "character". herrd
True story this: I was having an arvo pint outside the Clock House during the last embers of summer, when a dwarf baker - he couldn't have been more than three feet tall - hopped out of a delivery van and marched in with a tray of freshly baked bread on his shoulder. I turned to a table of drinkers next to me and said, "Here comes the short crust!" One chap laughed, two didn't. In life, as on the forum, you can't please everybody. N.B. dwarf was out of ear shot, so no little people were harmed during the execution of an admittedly poor joke.Otta: maybe they've started letting them ride the mobility scooters up to the bar now CPT's on its, erm, last legs? Jah Lush
Oh dear. Anyway, enough of this pub talk. I'm off out for a snifter or two. Cheers! KidKruger
Well if the guy on the scooter drinks I'd be tempted to report him as he leaves the pub because surely that's a technical case of drink driving, I mean someone could get a bruised ankle or something. It's an outrage ! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/21228-a-dark-day-the-cpt-lounged/page/3/#findComment-512334 Share on other sites
stephen509
Nearly bough flat 192 last year opposite the round.Decided not to as it was opposite a pub and it can always change hands for the worse.Good decision. MrBen
Harp!It looks like they'll contract out the lease to a "creative landlord". They'll have to be to make that back st location work. There might be some traces of bohemian East Dulwich....but Brighton this ain't. They will need to be able to gauge the local crowd well to turn it round and make it commercially viable. And, with apologies to you 15 regulars out there, more of the same isn't going to do the job. karter
Lots of negative talk there. Plenty of punters around the area to make that location work. Long as it's competitive with a great service then it will be a destination to go to. Innit. jimbo1964
I would say it's probably a good move. I like the CPT but unless there's football on it's pretty empty. As long as they keep the name and not any "Actress" nonsense I hope it's a success. katie1997
I quite like the CPT as it is but as many of my friends don't, I rarely get to meet them in there, which is a shame as its our local. Guess whoever is in the business has to do what it takes to stay in the game these days so best of luck to them. It would be nice to see the CPT spruced up a bit but not changed beyond all recognition. Serving food would be good as long as it wasn't over-priced and pretentious :)-D Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/21228-a-dark-day-the-cpt-lounged/page/3/#findComment-513439 Share on other sites
jimbo1964
I would say Crystal Palace Tavern would be a perfect name. And if the exterior was restored to Castle standards it could be a thing of beauty. It's got good outside space. I hope the new owners really make it work. jimbo1964
Oh yes. I get The Actress joke.. It still isn't funny. However as a pub I think it's a good addition to the area. Id like to see the CPT keep its old pub character. Otta
The Villager would have been a really crap name. The Actress IS a really crap name (as is the Bishop, but at least that was part of a chess theme, with The Castle in Camberwell). The Crystal Palace Tavern has been known as The CPT for a long long time, it was hardly a name change. (it is still called the crystal palace tavern officially).I really really hope they make it a great place to go. I admit, that in the l;ast couple of years, myself and my friends have been more inclined to go elsewhere. However, I would still be very very sad to see it gutted beyond recognition. MrBen
What about calling it "The Jah Lush" ?Named after one of the area's most impressive rock n roll drinkers, happy hour would start at 4.30pm;-) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/21228-a-dark-day-the-cpt-lounged/page/3/#findComment-513697 Share on other sites
Jah Lush
Hmmm... I'd only lend my name to it if they offered me a lifetime of free drinks for my continued patronage.
