With all due respect Parkdrive you really don't think that the likes of Marvin Gaye, James Brown, John Coltraine, Brian Wilson don't get much credit? i think you've some excellent candidates on your list but plenty who are pretty widely acknowleged too!

How about Barry Adamson?

Pretty instrumental in the Manchester punk and post-punk scene with the Buzzcocks and Magazine, albeit not influential.

He'd probably listened to Gil Scott Heron though.
