Last year Adori (I think it was her) and some others had a secular carol service outside their house on Uplands Road. It was really nice. However, I love the churchy ones, despite not being a church-goer myself. Does anyone know of any lovely Church carol services round here before Christmas eve?

No - absolutely not - just one of many myths about the Licensing Act 2003 - see here (near the bottom of the first page)

PM me on this if you are really concerned.

"The DCMS helpfully claims: "...a group of carol singers (players) outside a shop could be construed as incidental to the activity of people going about shopping and therefore exempt from the requirement for a licence." That might, on the face of it, fit the bill. Until you consider that any construing will be happening in a court, and will happen long after any Plod with an eye for the overtime will have banged you up for criminal singing. So, it would seem best to get a licence."

The above is utterly scatalogical.

Frankly, if you believe that either the council (they are responsible for enforcement of the Act) or the local Police Safer Neighbourhood Team will start arresting you on suspicion of singing a carol in a public place you're probably a Daily Mail reader who believes everything that foul organ excretes. Live a little - go and sing!

:-| I assume that's not aimed at me.

Knowing how pathetic the council and scrooges round here can b I wouldnt b surprised if someone tried to stop ya! :p

I propose an organised similtaneous singing from ur front garden throughout ED :D Obviously wiv the same carol :p

ALD stands for adrenoleukodystrophy which is a life threatening genetic disorder, normally affecting males .

It is an incredibly worthwhile charity and as I said before has a direct relevance to families living in East Dulwich so it would be an ideal charity for members of the forum to support.

You may see collection boxes in some shops in East Dulwich and there is an ALD charity shop in Penge , opposite Sainsburys.

    • A couple of interesting - albeit anecdotal - letters to the Grauniad today about what I think is more useful question about private schools' conduct and response as institutions, and whether they have changed in the interim. Excerpt: the private schools which were built to train young Englishmen for empire-building were deeply racist even in the 1980s. Mine had a quota for the maximum number of Jewish pupils... I say this not to defend Farage, but to point out that he – and many others from a similar background – were schooled in an environment that condoned or even encouraged blatant racism, while also equipping the pupils with the swagger, charm and polish to make others feel inferior and admiring of them. To see him in isolation is to miss the nature of the sorts of institutions that educated him, and the damage they do. I’m sure the schools will say they have changed, and I hope they have, but while they continue to educate their pupils to believe they are better than others, there will be plenty more where Farage came from. The Dulwich College "rape culture" allegations certainly seem to be consistent with an institutional culture of making its pupils feel better than others - albeit girls and women in those cases rather than Jews and Muslims. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/nov/26/racism-claims-against-nigel-farage-are-no-surprise-to-us
